Hi, been looking at the defra site, but have to say it has totally confused me about re-entry requirements.
if you are staying for 2 weeks do you need to see a vet abroad before you come home? It makes it seem like a lot of hassle.

Yes, no stamp in passport from a vet, no travel for animal. Simples.

XVI yes?

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

You must go to a vet between 120-24 hours before getting on ferry etc. They must give an approved wormer, which you can supply and stamp and sign the passport. They also check the animal is fit to travel and stamp and sign another section in the passport.
Your vet should inform you of these details when you apply for the passport.
regards Bob

We have taken our dog across to France on a number of occasions and don't find the entry requirements at all bad. If you are in France, many campsites near Calais will offer to make an appointment with a vet for you. We make for Montreuille-sur-mer and the Les Clercs site. Very helpful owner who will arrange an appointment for you and only 1.1/2 hours or less from Calais. Hope this helps have a chat with your vet too you have no need to worry.

Whatever the length of time, one day or one year, you are abroad you will need the Passport signing and dating by a Vet before being allowed back to the UK.
I'm presuming you already have a Pet Passport and the dogs medical requirements are up to date.
As stated earlier if you are travelling in France you must visit a French Vet within 24 hours and 120 hours (1 – 5 days) of your train return departure time.
The Vet will give a tablet for the Ecchinococcus treatment (page 16 of the Passport) and sign and date correctly the relevant page.
They should also examine the dog to ensure it is fit to travel, and if you want your moneys worth, sign and date Clinical Examination (page 28). Signing is not obligatory but if the dog does not appear well when presented to the Custom Officers at the Pet Passport Office then they can refuse the animal on the Train/Ferry until a Vet has examined the animal. I think it's worth having the page signed just for peace of mind.
The further you are from the Tunnel/Ferries when you see the Vet it's usually cheaper – but not always!
The five day window for having the Passport procedure means you can still be almost anywhere in Europe and still get back to the Ports within the 120 hours allowed.
You must check that the Passport has been correctly signed and dated by the Vet as it is your, and only your, responsibility if it is not correct when presented at the Passport Office.
Most French Vets speak at least a smattering of English and many speak better English than you and me.
Here is a video of our journey last year to the Pet Passport Office in Coquelles - http://youtu.be/q8cWJWFs0gQ
A Google map of Motorhome owners recommended Vets throughout Europe - http://goo.gl/maps/dGJM
Eurotunnel charge £16 each way for an animal (Dog, Cat, Ferret) and the Ferries, I think, £15 each way.
If you are travelling abroad on a regular basis it is almost certainly cheaper than leaving them at Kennels/Catteries and gives peace of mind to have them with you.
It may look daunting at first but in fact is very simple once you have been through the procedure as many others who take pets abroad will testify.

"Whatever the length of time, one day or one year, you are abroad you will need the Passport signing and dating by a Vet before being allowed back to the UK."

If you were only going for a day then the wormer can be done and certified in the passport by a UK vet prior to departure to enable the time requirement to be met.

We go twice a year with our dog, be careful, because the vet might try to put extras on your bill.he / she might say your dogs ears need cleaning and do it... 20 Euros.

I have been to Spain, Belgium and France with our dog....use a vet in Spain usually or if short trip have my own vet do the treatment but seems dearer in the UK....I have used the vet in Ardres, France just a few miles from Calais, have to book an appointment though...vet speaks great English although it is a large practise and have spoke with the one vet. It is a new out of the village/town building with plenty of parking and we were able to park just outside with our large motorhome...
