Hi all,

We are new to camping in France and have booked 2 sites in the Alps, one at 900 metres and one at 1600 metres altitude in August.

I have found historic temperature stats on French sites and they vary quite a lot compared to August in the UK.

Could anyone give me a general comparison as to how cold it might feel compared to UK in early summer at night?

We have reasonable spec sleeping bags but always take our goose down duvets for extra layers! I just want to know if we need to be very prepared for the cold. Also I noted someone saying on one thread that during the evening it can get quite cold so not to expect to sit out for too long, however I realise the weather is so variable these days.
Thanks

You'll be warm as long as the sun is shining, but as soon as it goes down, or behind the neighbouring mountain, the temperature will crash.

At 1600 metres in an evening you'll need fleeces and woolies, and at night we've gone to bed with hot water bottles and left the caravan heater on. In a tent you'll need your duvets. But the scenery up there makes it all worth while. Hope it all goes well for you.

August 2008 walking in the alps I had a foot of snow at 1800m and avalanche noises ahead so best be prepared!!

Even worse a few years earlier had freezing rain at a similiar altitude but generally as said previously is accurate.Chilly when the sun goes down but remember the sun at altitude  U.V is stronger so you need to take precautions re sunburn.

The alps are fab though.

I have never experienced it being overly cold in August but perhaps I have been lucky. Even skiing in April I have been in just a T shirt at twice the altitude. However, I have experienced low night time temperatures and I can well believe Ninja have snow in August as temperatures can fluctuate wildly. Pack for all weathers and you want be disappointed.

Word to the wise, water boils at a lower temperature at altitude so dont be surprised to get yourself a cold cup of tea.
