We are going to France later on in the year.We have picked out a site to stay on near boulogne and have received their brochure and booking form. I know this sounds daft but we are not sure how to send the deposit. The form says they accept cheques and postal orders, but as we cant write our cqs in euros perhaps someone can advise me.

Sorry but we are new to this game.

Will they take credit card deposits over the telephone or internet? Some do.

If not, I think that the PO do some sort of international money order, but I expect it will cost extra.

Hi Stew

They should have advised you of the current exchange rate, we always do!

If you send a sterling chq' they may pass on the bank charges they have to pay.

Why don't you send them an email and ask what to do?

Good Luck

We have had this problem with Campsites and Gites and the best (cheapest) solution I have found, if they will not take a credit card, is to send Cash (Euro's) through the post office. You just address an envelope, put in a note and the cash and the post office will insure it in case anything goes wrong. I always ask the people who I am sending it to to e mail me or phone me to say it has arrived and also confirm receipt in writing.

I couldn't agree more.

The pound has had its day. Why are we always the last to be dragged into the 21st century.

There are no more xenophobic nations than the French and Germans, but they have embraced the Euro. In this country we are too introspective, and think that because we do things differently it must be for the best.

So bring on the Euro, I say - and the sooner the better.

Perhaps we should think about changing to driving on the right, while we are at it? Think of the benefits to us campers and caravanners who go abroad!

Though the money is fully accepted throughout the Euro zone, the bank clearing systems were not integrated at the same time. This used to mean that if a person in France, say, banked a cheque, drawn in euros on a German bank, the bank would still make a hefty charge for clearing the cheque. I don't know if this has changed yet. I doubt if the banks would rush to change it. Would affect their multi-million pound yearly profits. Cynical old me.

Where we went last year (Ardèche) ... I asked how she'd like me to pay & she said pay when you get here. When I got there, she said pay at the end. I must have an honest face:-)

As for the Euro and the perfidy of the banks.. anyone remember the uniform Eurocheque? Or, as they are known in much of the rest of Europe .. cheques. The reason these never really caught on here was that British bankers didn't like the fact they were invented by the Germans, would you believe! So we have different cheques and they charge us an arm and a leg for using them in the rest of Europe... hmm...

When we lived in Holland and Belgium they were our standard-issue cheques and could be used cross-border upto a certain amount (£10k rings a bell, probably not though, but it was a good month's salary equivalent whatever it was)

Why bother booking, just go, there are so many campsites over there, we have never had any problems finding one.  Book your ferries and just go to wherever you end up, much more fun, plus you can chase the weather.

We stayed there for one night in September, arriving quite late after a delayed ferry crossing, and they seemed very nice, helpful people.  The site facilities were clean and well looked after.  Can't comment on anything else as we left the following morning.

If you pre-book first you can get a cheque made out, via your bank, in Euros.  We've use this facility once when booking a particular pitch we wanted at a very popular and busy site.  I think you pay over the odds for this facility, but if you're set on booking before you set off it's probably worth it for the peace of mind.  I must admit we generally don't book anywhere.  We usually use Camping Cheques and just 'turn up'.  There's a comment about paying at the end of your stay - even when we use cash rather than Camping Cheques we've NEVER been asked to pay at the beginning of the stay - always at the end.  The only times we've paid 'up front' is when we've wanted an early start, and weren't sure what time the 'reception' would open for payment.

In one municial at Coullons in the Loire, on an overnight stop,  the manager had no change - and asked us to just post the cost through the postbox when we'd been into town and got change at the bar!!!!   There's a lot more trust over the other side of the channel.
