Has anyone been to a site where it is actually possible to see the Puy de Dome volcanoes from your pitch?
I don't mind if it's a tiny site, in fact I'd prefer that.

Having driven up the A75 last year & seen em all from the car I'm inspired to go back this year & just sit and look.

Thanks!

They can be seen for miles and miles, how close would you like to be?

The sites I've looked at (on Google Earth) seem to be surrounded by trees or round the other side of a hill. I'd like one with a view, if that's ok, please.

Look at the campsites on the above, it may require you to practice your French and ring or email and ask how good the views are from each campsite. Most will speak enough English.

Thanks, I'll do that. I've got a degree in French, so I'm sure I'll manage

The one at Montbartoux that Doortje mentioned looks to have stunning views.

You need to be far enough away to see the volcanoes - as you say they're a wonderful sight as you drive up the A75.  We stayed at Indigo Royat near Clermont Ferrand, and very near to the Puy de Dome, and though they'd cut the trees on the Puy de Dome side of the site, you could only see the view if you walked around that side of the site - and not from any of the pitches!

It looks good as long as the new toilet block is finished!!

As for your french degree, now I know who to contact when I'm next in the mire with my 'o' level french, and we've only lived here 10 years!!

Hi few years back we camped in La Bourboule at foot of volcano opposite the chairlift that takes you to the top. Lovely small town with few campsites there only few minutes drive takes you up to the top what a view .Hope this helps.

There are several sites that have already been mentioned. One that you might consider is the municipal at Pontgibaud although you cannot actually see the puys.
Nothing fancy but very close to the volcano chain and I can recommend a visit to the Lemtaguy (sure to be spelt wrong)volcano, and even more a walk up the Puy de Pariou and down into its crater.Another great walk is up the Puy de Como. There are some lovely spots all around the Puy de Dome

We visited this area in 2012, and after a false start in 'Volvic' (truly hideaus campsite location).....we were on the way to a campsite and came across a small and perfectly formed campsite nr Chatel Guyon ( a former spa town, really charming):

Camping La Croze

Route De Mozac

St Hyppolyte

www.campingcroze.com

We enjoyed stunning views from this terraced campsite...facilities were amazing and ultra clean.

We parked in Ceyssat and went up the Puy De Dome on the Panoramique train, then walked back...lovely walk. I will not spoil the surprise but there is an ancient ruin at the summit.

www.panoramiquedesdomes.fr

The journey to the Auvergne was not great, as we had approached ia via Limousin and experienced closed down sites all along the route. My fault as I wanted to go to Chartres and visit a friend en route.  We really enjoyed the area but spent the last week up Burgundy, and then onto 'Guedeleon', but that is another story. Just google chateau de Guedelon, something of a detour but well worth it.
