We visited this area in 2012, and after a false start in 'Volvic' (truly hideaus campsite location).....we were on the way to a campsite and came across a small and perfectly formed campsite nr Chatel Guyon ( a former spa town, really charming): Camping La Croze Route De Mozac St Hyppolyte www.campingcroze.com We enjoyed stunning views from this terraced campsite...facilities were amazing and ultra clean. We parked in Ceyssat and went up the Puy De Dome on the Panoramique train, then walked back...lovely walk. I will not spoil the surprise but there is an ancient ruin at the summit. www.panoramiquedesdomes.fr The journey to the Auvergne was not great, as we had approached ia via Limousin and experienced closed down sites all along the route. My fault as I wanted to go to Chartres and visit a friend en route. We really enjoyed the area but spent the last week up Burgundy, and then onto 'Guedeleon', but that is another story. Just google chateau de Guedelon, something of a detour but well worth it.
