Macon would make for a good second overnight on the way to the Ardeche, We used to camp at one quite close to the Town itself, think it must have been a Municipal, but had good facilities.
Depends how hard you want to push, coming from Worcestershire You could just do a one stop at Guignicourt . Will leave you a bit of a honk next day but do able.
We used to break up the journey in Burgundy - around the Dijon area - which was just about the right distance for two long days.
However, the timing of your ferry arrival will make all the difference to recommendations. If you're arriving early morning then you can get a fair way down France, if late afternoon then a couple of hours away from Calais might be the right distance.
We have travelled from Calais to the Ardeche many times and have usually stopped in Guignicourt and Macon. Without the stop in Macon makes it a long drag. Sites in Guignicourt and Macon are good sites and easy to get to from the motorway.

Hi Becky, I don't even know which route you are taking so can't advise, but a decent site guide will give you about 50 possibilities for overnight stops - but in August on popular routes it's best to make an early morning start and pick a site at 4pm wherever you happen to be. Then open the beers and watch the others arrive.
