I don't think France is any more safe, or any less safe, than other popular European holiday destinations.  Just saying you've never heard of any problems in umpteen years of camping doesn't mean the problems don't exist.  I could say that in my 66 years of living in Merseyside, Birmingham, Kidderminster, Leeds, York and other places I've never been mugged/burgled, but that doesn't mean England is a low-crime environment!

As others have said, just be sensible.  But as there are plenty of cheap campsites for an overnight stop, is it really worth taking a risk just to save a few euros?

It's not the money, it's finding a campsite open when you arrive late at night. Or indeed at all. I remember being on the way home in northern France in late September one year, and not finding a site open at all, we ended up driving onto the autoroute to spend the night in the car.

Thanks for the help guys.

I didn't really want to pitch up for one night, it just didn't seem worth it and we really wanted to arrive in resort around lunch time so we figured the best option would be to drive through the night with a bit of sleep at some point in the car.
Yeah i know I'm likely to feel a bit rubbish for a day afterwards but i can always sleep it off in my deck chair with a beer by my side.

I think, as a previous post suggests, we may either stop on the autoroute near a peage station or come off and look for a local super market car park to crash out in.
Who knows i may even do the full route if i take on enough caffeine.
