Just a warning for anyone travelling around Le Mans in mid-June and early July.
The Le Mans 24 heures this year is 14-15th June, so you don't want to be around the town, especially the southern part, on the 11-15th (unless, of course, you are going to the race!!). Also, the A28 going north on the Sunday afternoon/evening, and to a lesser extent on Monday 16th will be a no-no - a couple of years ago there was a 4 hour queue at the tolls at the end of the A28 on the sunday evening. Remember that the circuit includes part of the old N138 (now the D338) to Tours, so the road will be closed on the dates above, plus in the evenings ('til after midnight) of 11 and 12th.
To a lesser degree again, the Le Mans classic is on the 4-6th July and whilst not as populated as the 24h, there will still be quite a bit of extra traffic around.

If you are simply driving past the city, the motorway (A28) is usually clear.
