Two weeks today we set off for Millau, France. We have a list of want to does, one being a day trip down to the Med to dip our toes, as we have not yet had that pleasure whilst away with the caravan. My question is where's the best spot to head. We don't mind busy places but a quiet out of the way spot for a picnic appeals. One further point we will have Sheba our crazy (but well behaved....as she has trained us to pick up her poo) dog with us, so if it's hot we cant leave her in the car. I look forward to your replies.

Hi Hugh.
We did a day trip from the Ardeche down to the Med.

Le Grau-du-Roi was the destination, superb beach and even in mid July plenty of parking on the huge beach car park behind the dunes.

The beach itself must be a good 5 miles long, maybe more.

It was a long day for a day trip, but worth it for a swim in the Med, and is one of the reasons why we are going to Frejus this July.

Hi Hugh and Penny

A couple of years ago we did just that; a day trip from Millau. We went to Sete. Completely by chance we went one of the days they have the Jousting Tournament on one of the canals; the contestants each stand on the end of a ladder-type plank stuck out behind the boat, carrying a blunt-ended lance and a shield. The idea is to stick your lance in your opponent's shield and tip him into the water as the boats pass each other. Your problem is he's trying to do the same to you!

A wonderful fun day. And you wouldn't believe how seriously they take it. Gotta be worth trying to see!

We've done the Med from Millau many times, either to Grau du Roi, or to Grau d'Agde!  Both are about the same distance, Grau d'Agde is a bit quieter.  No problem with journey times, though in peak season I'd go early before the crowds.

I presume.....dangerous I know.... But second week in June not peak season. Got to sat Sete is appealing at the moment. We like early starts so will be there well before lunch, and then have plenty of time to saunter stroll and take in the ambience, and people watch

Sete is a lovely little town, you may get so distracted there that you won't make it to the beach! Check out the covered market in Les Halles. Second week in June should be quiet enough.

I've answered on another forum, just to advise checking out the water jousting calendar with the Offices du Tourisme in that area.  They have jousts in Sete, but also in Agde and other places with a river outlet.  The teams take it very seriously, but it's a fantastic day and not to be missed if you're in the right area at the right time.

We have stayed near Millau for the last 3 years and on each occasion have driven down to the Med.

Its an easy journey down the autoroute and perfect for a day trip.

Personal favourites which are nearere after the drive are Valras Plage and Palavas Les Flots (excellent).

Both have good beaches and plenty of parking.

Portinagnes Plage in the Grau d'Agde allows dogs on a bit of the beach - and a very lovely part of the beach it is too. We had great fun swimming with our dog when we were there. We actually went to Carcassone for the day when at Millau and stopped overnight at the med before going back to Millau the next day. We went in August though and the drive was very, very busy

Portiragnes Plage is utterly gorgeous, in my humble opinion the perfect beach.
