If you are driving from Calais then cheapest route would be down to Lille, across to Namur, down through Luxembourg & Metz to Strasbourg, across the river into Germany & down the 5.

Have look at this : https://maps.google.co.uk/

michell8's route is the one we have used several times.

We have over nighted at:

Hôtel Campanile Valenciennes Ouest - Petite Forêt

Cheap and cheerful, with a cafe/restaurant across the way.

Regards,

Jim.

We have come back via Strasbourg and can't remember it being a difficult route. Just follow the signs for Kehl, Willstatt, or Allemagne. Not too difficult.

Hi Keavo, Munstertal is the next campsite along from Belchenblick (away from Staufen) and I think the actual town as such is slightly further along than that.

We'll be there more as you are returning I would guess and plan on doing a few days in Belgium or north Eastern France on way back up

Saw Belchenblick in the CC overseas sites but found Munstertal via this site - looks a great location!

It's about 3K, to the campsite at Munstertal from Belchenblick, the town is about another K or so, there is a footpath/cycleway between the two towns that follows the railway route. The train runs from outside your site to Munstertal town which is the terminus, and you can get off at the campsite as the station is right outside. There are a couple of restaurants on the road behind Munstertal campsite, road named Etzenbach heading towards Staufen. Lovely fresh trout in the second one. Good food and beer in Restaurant behind the station at the Munstertal campsite.I can thoroughly recommend the Rosti in Rathaus Alter Simpl in Staufen, they also had live music when we were there one day. We had a great holiday at Munstertal. Oh and if you are putting up an awning, take lots of heavy duty rock pegs, the ground is very hard at Munstertal.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I have booked an overnight on the way down staying at camping la samaritaine near Buzancy, anyone stayed here before, booked it to break up the journey. Want to try and get to Lake Constance while were in Germany, any advice on where to head for around the lake, also any good bars in staufen any tips appreciated.
Ian , is the journey through Belgium &Luxemberg any better than through France.

Keavo
The route via Belgium and Lux will be far cheaper on tolls than going down via autoroutes in France.
From memory something like £60 cheaper each way if towing, and fuel only about £5 more and overall time less than an hour more.#
Doing that we can then add a couple of nights on to our stopover on way back for same price it would cost simply to drive via France

Check out viamichelin website for tolls and costs if you wish to check

We are staying probably near Luxenbourg city for a stopover on way down as pretty much en route.
The site you mention looks nice but is well out of the way of any of the main routes so may wish to double check its what you want.

We will probably look to stay maybe 3 nights somewhere on way back possibly southern belgium or over into France depending
