Hi everyone!
New to posting but have spent the last few weeks reading LOADS of posts on this forum to try and work out our holiday this year! I am looking to go somewhere in the Charente-Maritime area. We have always camped with Canvas but this year have decided at the last minute to take a punt and go with our own tent etc. However really struggling to decide what to do for the best and would be grateful for any first hand feedback?

We LOVE Ile de Re but appreciate it is really too late to try and find a pitch (we have to go first 2 weeks of summer holidays). Our last holiday was to Oleron but was at Whitsun and was a bit cold and soggy which I think has marred our view of the island. I have been looking at La Palmyre area as we really do like to cycle with our kids (7 and 5) to places - this is what we loved so much about Re, being able to cycle to a different little town every day. However I am a little put off by bad reviews of the Les Mathes area sites with regards to noise and toilet block cleanliness.

Have looked at Le Logis (not Logis du Breuil) in St Palais but not sure how much cycling there is to be done and what the area/site is like as there aren't many reviews? Also I've read a few people say the traffic through this whole area is horrendous during high season - is it really that bad?

Or on the other hand should I be re-considering Oleron?

Here's what we like:
Beach close by (ideally cycling distance)
Ditto a town/somewhere to go for an evening out
Swimming pool
Good toilet blocks (very important!!)
Play Area
No need for any evening entertainment but don't mind some if it isn't too noisy!
Some leisurely cycle paths

Has anyone got any thoughts on a campsite in this general area that might tick these boxes and still have availability? Really pulling my hair out trying to decide what to do!

Have a look at La Palombiere at Les Mathes- phone and speak to them about availability. But be sure to get the right website as there 's another with the same name at Sarlat in the Dordogne.

You may have read my review of L'oree du Bois.....I mentioned the facilities quite a lot!However, there is one loo block that was so much nicer, which was near to the "bring your own tent" section rather than tour operators. The site itself is in a great location, maybe worth another look.

Thanks Berrirow I have sent an email as it does look like a lovely little site.

Warbis - i think I have read your review yes! I really can't stand dirty showers/toilets so that is the major thing putting me off L'Oree. Otherwise how hectic is the site? I don't mind fairly large sites as we like interlude at ile de re but I don't want it to feel like Butlins! Did you do much cycling from there?

Yes we did lots, the side road outside the campsite takes you down to the beaches, we tended to drive that bit with the bikes on the rack, stop at a carpark then cycle through the cycle trails to a beach that we liked. The site isnt hectic, but the area is! If you want peace and quiet, its not the place to go in high season.

We're going to Camping La Pinede at Les Mathes this year...haven't been before, so obviously have no idea what it's like, but we like this area and this seemed to tick most of our boxes. The nearby beach is great, La Palmyre is okay...getting a bit more touristy every time we visit though...there is a lot of traffic around, but if you are cycling much of the time, that shouldn't be a big issue.

Over the road from La Palombiere and towards Les Mathes you will find La Cle des Champs which we feel is much grassier than many sites in the area, also there aren't any pine trees there so no hassle with sap. There is a shop on site and a small restaurant/ snack bar. There is evening entertainment but it is generally quite low key. All sites along the route de la Fouasse suffer to one degree or another from the noise of Lunaparc amusements and rides.

Hi, I quite fancied trying Camping Val-Vert which is in Vauz sur Mer, between La Palmyre/St Palais Sur Mer and Royan. It's not far from the lovely beach of Nauzan Plage (gentle sea here) and there are shops and cafes etc near by. There is cycling along the coast in either direction. I really liked St Palais, lots of Belle Epoque villas and a rather genteel air, plus we were lucky enough to be there when they held a massive (and free) firework event. Fabulous and friendly.

I think we didn't go there in the end as it was a bit out of budget at the time but not outrageously so.

The coast off the Les Mathes area is called the Cote Sauvage for obvious reasons - it has wild seas but miles of sand so well worth a visit but keep the little ones close to you . Nauzan is much more tranquil.

Indeed the Cote Sauvage can be quite wild and attracts surfers for that reason but the Grande Cote is just about equidistant from Les Mathes and is quite calm. One of the reasons we like the area is the variety of beaches within a short drive or cycle (if that is what you are able to do).

We stayed on Ile Doleron last year at http://signol.camp-atlantique.co.uk/en

It was fab toilets and showers were always clean, great cycle croutes to the beaches - the town was a short walk to the restuarants and ice cream parlours.

we had hoped to go back but they dont have availability for when we want :(

Has evrything you asked for - Now can you tell me about interlude on il de Re please.

What about ile de noirmoutier?
We stayed in an indigo campsite right on the beach it had a direct cycle track to the nearest towns so we never used our car while we were there. I don't think this island is as busy as ile de re.
The pitch you get would make a big difference to your enjoyment we were between the dunes and the sea.

On the mainland, how about Camping La Garenne at Pont L'Abbe d'Arnoult. It's a lovely site, set in trees, with a pool complex next door. The town of Pont L'Abbe is very pretty & only 1/2 hour from the beach or places like Brouages.
We camped there when ours were 2 & 6, lovely!
