We're off to Italy (Tuscany) for the first time this summer. Previously we've been to various bits of France and the German/Austrian Alps and so far we've always just turned up at a site we like the look of and have never had a problem finding a pitch.

Are we going to be able to get away with that in Tuscany? I'm getting that it's not as easy to find cheap sites as in France but I'm more concerned about not being able to find anyway

Italian campsites tend to be very expensive in the main season. If you can manage without electrics its possible that you will get in somewhere so best always to have a plan B. Campsites are not as frequent in Italy either

We never booked in Italy, reasonably priced Tuscan site at Sovicille ... near Sienna ... cheque my review.

Yes, we're definitely seeing that the sites are expensive in Italy, be nice on that count when we're not tied to the school holidays (dim and distant future, that one ...). We can manage without electrics so I'm hoping that will help. I think we'll probably plan to ring a day or two ahead of moving on so that we can retain some flexibility, really don't want to have to book everything up in advance as that rather spoils the fun!
