Hi, thinking about leaving the caravan in France this year as we don't use it in the uk much any more (not at all this year ) but still enjoy going to France every year. Anyone else do this ? Any advice appreciated.

Yes, we do!  We store it near Chateauroux, in a secure barn, with a British owner, and can access it any time we want to.  It costs us £200 a year, and the insurance is the same as it would be at home.  We did store further south near St Pons de Thomieres, but found that involved two overnight stops and they were less flexible about pick up times which had to be during working hours.

Now, in central France, we can get down to it with a very early morning ferry, and get back home after dropping it off, without having to add in extra hotel nights unless we actually want to - like we did this year because it was so hot!

We found when we stored further south that the additional costs of the hotels, meals en-route, etc., made it very much more expensive.

You have to be very organised in terms of packing, taking things home to wash, etc.  Last year we brought the caravan home for some work doing (it could have been done there, but we left it too late to contact the service engineer).  As a result we were a bit disorganised and forgot things - for instance bags to bring our clothes back home, so the return journey was a bit chaotic as we checked into the hotel with a beach bag and a rucksack!

Next year we're considering a seasonal pitch - with an option to take the caravan off elsewhere if we feel like it, then just five months in storage over the winter.

Kelper stores his camper for even less, I think near Angers, and then there are others who have their caravan stored on sites, and brought out on to a pitch when they want to use it.

Thanks val, we tend to be around the vandee area so would be looking around there with the option to go further south when picking the van up. Will give it a go for a year and see how we get on.

We store about 75 miles west of Angersgood launch point for the Vendee.
New, very secure facility on a farm, extremely pleasant young farm manager. 185 euros a year.
It's the cheapest price I've found ... and suits us perfectly as a launch pad.
If you want to look it up for geographical position: Botz en Mauge.
Let me know if you want further details.

Frankly, I've never asked.
It's on a large farm doing everything from ducklings, to cattle, to agri etc etc.
Depending on our pick up time, we sometimes do a nearby B&B, but usually pick up and go.
If you are completely self contained, I'm sure he'd be happy enough if you 'camped' on the farm.
Being France, I'm sure there's a campsite within 20 kms.

We did the rounds of four possibilities in lieu of a holiday last summer. Having similar criteria to yourself. We looked at:

A barn near Chartres (can't remember the name but it was too remote and too far north for our liking)

Camping de la Touche nr Loches - quiet site, off the beaten track, indoor and outdoor storage, plunge pool.

Le Serpolin nr Saumur - lovely peacful site, off the beaten track, indoor and outdoor storage, plunge pool. A bit like a CL. Fabulous local Cave - heading back for refuelling on our way home this year!

Camping Courte de la Vallee, Airvault. A bit like a club site really. Indoor and outdoor storage, small pool, takeaway, bistro.

We chose the last but Le Serpolin was a close second. Chosen on our own personal needs and therefore I am not going to flower up any of the three.

We caught an 11am shuttle and were on site about 6pm. Meandered down, had two days on site to clean inside and relax pre-tow. Then headed off to the Dordogne for 10 days. Two days back at base to pack and stock up on Loire Vin then home. We will also have at least another week staying on site later in the summer.

There is a chap who lives locally and services vans on at least two of those three sites.

We have found the savings to be of benefit, we have not had the pre towing arguments as we were more relaxed, have saved a fortune on channel crossings and initial fuel and can make it worth while to come over twice. If family wish to use the van they can do without the need to tow it.
