Hi, Any one done the Ferry, Poole to Cherbourg, had any complications? we intend to overnight in Poole, get the Ferry in the morning, usually go Dover/Calais, but after many years we are just so fed up with the M25,M1.M6, we drive down from Chester, so these routes are unavoidable and it is supposed to be a 6 hour journey, took us 8 hours in June, so frustrating, it seems that the whole motoring population have come out just to annoy us. We intend to travel on the 20th Aug.

We always do this crossing.
We stay just down the road at South Lytchett Manor, lovely site, on check in collect the voucher for a free bottle of wine when you dine at the local pub. We have always had a nice meal there and starts the holiday off.

We are club voyage members so always book a cabin. Get on board, have breakfast, have a sleep, have a shower in the cabin and we are good to go, we just find it nice to have peace and quiet on the sailing.

When we went 3 weeks ago we were delayed a few hours as the sea was so rough but think this is a rarity.

If you don't have membership try a price with someone's discount code on here if you haven't already booked.

All nice and straight forward the other end.

On return there's a small cafe inside the building it's not up to much but if you need a drink etc it's fine.

Have you looked at the Newhaven Dieppe  crossings with LD Lines.  I see you have just a car and may not be towing.  If so you can get a late night ferry crossing, with cabin, and an early morning return crossing for just £118.00 (without the cabin it's just £78.00 return).  I've just booked and it gets me 137 km nearer my destination in the Landes, and I get off to a lovely early morning start in France. Towing a caravan puts the price up but to a not unreasonable £178, compared to the longer crossings.

Did Portsmouth Cherbourge and St Malo Portsmouth on Brittany ferries last year. Excellent fast craft and traditional ship. As Brittany Ferries use longer routes their ships tend to be bigger and ocean worthy rather than the cross Channel ferry boats at Dover.
I've seen the Poole to Cherbourge ship as it passes Sandbanks and Studland, looks good from a distance.

hi  artc,

Hi Paul, sent you my email address, thanks for the code. Yes it's a right pain in the backside getting down to Dover, the foreign lorries on the roads must have quadrupled in the last five years, if only 10% of immigrants have purchased vehicles since they came here, there must be at least 50,000 more on the roads, I shudder to think what the roads will be like in 20 years, our motorways will be gridlocked and I agree the M1 is a disgrace, I come off the M6 onto the M5 then across to the M40, most times the M25 is not too bad going past Heathrow, I try to miss the peak times, but I think in future I will sail from Poole, no M1 or M25 ever again.

We've used the fastcraft crossing Portsmouth Cherbourg for the past 2 years in our motorhome having got fed up with Dover Calais route.

It was a real pleasure for the journey out but for our return journey (which we booked after 5 weeks in France) we had to use Cherbourg Poole crossing. That too was excellent though it took a little longer than the fastcraft.

I would recommend either to you!

Coming from the north, western and eastern departure ports are much of a muchness for us, but missing the M25 and taking an overnight crossing with a cabin definitely suits better.

I'd consider UK to Cherbourg as then once you're off, you're away. We won't use it coming back again though. Hanging around the port isn't brilliant and the fast crossing to Portsmouth is hell on a hull (or two).

For SW France we use Portsmouth > St Malo but the return timings would need an o/n stop somewhere first. By switching to mid week this year and this time going for Caen to Portsmouth coming back we've saved 50% compared to last year, and that's with cabins both ways.

We try and regard the total journey as part of the holiday so doing it in some comfort more than offsets the lower prices of the eastern options.
