I'm just looking for a ferry crossing for our proposed August trip down to South Western France - Landes area.  I normally use the shorter crossings, being a cheapo, but this time the quote from LD Lines, from Newhaven to Dieppe beats both P and O, and DFDS prices.  For a car, solo, the quote for the crossings I want is £78 return, and a cabin would cost £40 extra.  This gets me 137 km nearer my destination, and gets me off to a very early morning start in France.  I share the driving, so can have a nod during the journey.

The longer Channel crossings cut down the mileage and driving time but not by nearly enough to make me want to choose a longer crossing.I could save 180 km and 1 hour 30 minutes of driving time, but it would cost me an extra £310 including cabins.

SNAP!  I've just been doing the same comparisons and looking at others.    We hadn't booked our next crossings yet, and our timings are always complicated because of the long journey time in England and then to our storage depot in mid-France.  I've just been looking on the Caravan Club website, and then at the ferry companies.  The cheapest return crossing I can get for our dates is £78 directly with LD Lines and like you this cuts our journey mileage and time down.  Other prices were £88 with DFDS and £93 with P and O - both through the Caravan Club

We like a bargain too, and in recent years have used the DFDS Caravan Show offers but they weren't as good this year.  Additionally on our recent return from France DFDS wanted us to pay £48 to amend a crossing.  Instead we booked another with P and O, saving £13 and giving us a £20 voucher towards meals or drinks in the restaurant!  Result!!!

When OH wakes up I shall tell him I've booked!

I'm intrigued about Newhaven. We have been from Dover-Calais the last 2 years, but as we are off to the Gironde this year we have decided to do this route.

Not a lot of info about the place! I guess this will be a new bit of the adventure. Trying to decide if avoiding the M25 all together (we will be on that part of the journey between 8-9pm on a Saturday if anyone knows what I might expect)is the best way to go. Hmmmm...

As for Dieppe , the route south seems to all hinge on Rouen! Val- is there a thread based around Yvetot? Have searched and can't find one but this seems like the way to go given the issues of bridges/tunnels?

Hello William

Can't think how you would avoid the M25 if you're coming down the M6/M1 from the northwest. At that time on a Saturday it may be busy but not dreadful. The best way to Newhaven is via M23/A23, then A27. That is motorway or dual to the far end of the Lewes bypass.

As for Rouen, I'm sure you'll pick up Val's route easily.

The Yvetot route is described on some of the posts about Rouen, but I don't know it as we don't head in that direction - always south, not west!

I'm not an expert on the M25 but would have thought someone will know what it's like at that time on a Saturday.

Interestingly we've looked at LD Lines - and been tempted by the prices.  Anyone used this route and would recommend/avoid?

Shiny top- I'd be using the M40-M25-M23-A23-A27-A26

Can't imagine using the M1 from our part of the world.

The detour would be leaving the M40 around Oxford, heading to Newbury, Winchester, Chichester. I guess this will depend on what the traffic reports say on that day!

I've also been thinking about heading towards Poitiers on the way down south once in France, aiming for the N10 down to Bordeaux then across?

we went via dieppe and got back yesterday from the vendee . no problems in rouen at all. came trough at around 1o pm. one thing i would say is the cabin was disgusting we had on the way out. toilet dirty, shower dirty and hair in the bed. plus no info on the way to the ferry about car alarms etc. i'm sure the car deck had a direct link to our cabin for the noise!!!!

I am also interested in cheapest crossings - we've left it quite late to book anything this year (due to family issues) and I want to go Bank Holiday week. The ferries for Dover calais for the times we wanted to cross are either booked or almost the same price as the tunnel!

Anyone found any more prices that were good?
