Hi all, off to l'ardechois in 3 weeks, will be using the night ferry to dieppe and then travelling down the next day.... Not sure which route to take. Last year took the road via clermont ferrand as stayed near millau, but wondering whether to take the Lyon route this time? If so, is this a lot more in tolls?? Many thanks for any suggestions.....

On ViaMichelin there is a choice of three routes, unless you customise an alternative.

The tolls range between £30 and £70 depending on which route.

ViaMichelin - Dieppe to Vallon

Yes, this is the route we're taking. Went the other way 2 years ago, via Clermont Ferrand and Millau, less on tolls but slower.

Pay attention you two! The OP is setting off from Dieppe.

Yeah alright, smartypants.

OP realistically needs to do the Rouen, Evreux, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, Bourges, Clermont Ferrand and across to Vallon route then. It's a nice route, a bit "hilly" in places (I only cried once on the precipitous mountain bits LOL) and cheap on tolls.

Hi have had a look at the Michelin map, was thinking down to Rouen, then cut across to the Lyon side and straight down as seemed quicker, normally we take the road all the way down past clermont to millau which is where we normally stay, I remember how hilly that gets!!! But do the tolls work out at a lot more..and not sure how to get around Rouen as the bridge and tunnel are closed??

I wouldn't go down as far as Millau, though, to get to L'Ardechois.  Take the turning at Brioude, south of Clermont Ferrand, head toward Le Puy but take the Le Puy bypass, then on the N102 down to Aubenas, and onwards to Vallon.  Quicker (OK hillier)!!!

And if you don't like hills, then Dieppe, Rouen, Chartres, Orleans, Nevers, Moulins, Roanne, St Etienne, Vienne. Then pay tolls south down the Rhone valley.

Is it really slow going when you turn off the motorway south of clermont towards vallon....I would prefer that route and on Michelin that's appears less miles and obviously it's less in tolls than using the Lyon side, we arrive in dieppe at 4.00am and ideally want to be there by evening!!! Driving down on a Monday so hopefully not as busy as weekends....

Well I wouldn't want to do it in one day, and at the moment none of the route planning sites seem to be working properly.  Mappy.com states that it will take 9 hours and 54 minutes.  I suppose with a 4.00 am arrival time and two drivers it should be possible if you've been able to grab any sleep at all on the ferry.

If you go via Clermont Ferrand and then Brioude you can do the whole route non-toll if you choose (but not in 9 and a half hours).  Paying tolls on those sections where there are toll roads will cost around 30 euros - the other way via Lyon will cost around 50 euros in tolls and still takes almost 9 hours.

You can use the route planning website to play around with routes to see which is the quickest/cheapest/easiest.

We are both driving, my husband drove to millau last year no problem, he enjoys the drive! Coming back we stay overnight at bourges, as we will be driving from camping neptune, agde, which is too far to do in one day!!!!
