I've just come back from an amazing week in Holland, I'd spent most of the time using public transport & cycling, I used the car once to visit a supermarket. I decided to stop for breakfast at Hema after I got packed up but wasn't sure how the parking worked as it was all in Dutch. It seemed like you needed a card & needed to put coins in too. The sign above the parking meter in a little car park, showed a P & coins, when I put coins in the just kept coming out.

If someone could tell me how the parking works, as I'm already planning on another trip next year. I really don't want anything to happen to my car.

Hi stace75 we encountered this while we visiting Scheveningen earlier on this year. None of the parking meters seem to accept cash, only credit or debit card.

Was there no one around to ask? Most Dutch have some knowledge of English if not speak it fluently.

Most of the ones we've been to are pay ones wit cash, and it's something like 15 cents for 10 minutes, so you just feed it with however much you want for the time you need.

Another system we've used is with the card in a plastic pocket with a window with a rotating clock thing (like the old disabled card). You have to buy one of the cards in a local shop, then you get a certain amount of time free when you display the card.

We've always asked local people if unsure, invariably they, as David suggests, speak fluent English.

Just returned from Amsterdam and encountered same problems re parking - we managed to ask a local about how to pay and he told us that it was only by card as payment by cash wasnt allowed - apparently it had been changed a couple of weeks earlier.
When we tried to use visa debit card - it was rejected saying visa not accepted !
We also had the same problem in a few of the supermarkets - visa not accepted so had to make sure we always had enough euros to pay - which was a bit of a bind .
