We will be covering many miles when we go camping to the south of France for three weeks in August, so I've started getting the car into shape.

When I took my car in to my local tyre shop this morning to get the tyres checked (the two front tyres look to be wearing a bit thin) he told me that they were just legal at the moment. In general conversation I mentioned to him that we were going to France for our holidays. Ah he said, and informed me that my tyres would be illegal over there as the French require a deeper tread depth compared to the uk. Needless to say I got him to put new ones on.

You learn something new everyday. Thought this info might benefit others!

Rubbish, it is the same in France. 1.6mm ( I think)

The difference in France is, it is illegal for a garage to sell/fit a tyre if the other tyre on the same axle is different in any way. Tread depth being one element.

So if you have an unrepairable puncture in France unless they can match your spare or remaining tyre exactly you'll end up buying two tyres. Caravans included.

Though your car would pass a French MOT with different tyres on the same axle.

Having just done a brief search on the net I believe your right 1.6 seams to be the legal limit for uk and France. I believe the man at the garage has been giving misleading info. Of course this benefits him as he's more chance of making a sale. Wonder if he knows he's giving out incorrect info?. Pleased I've got four matching new tyres for safety's sake though! one tyre was an odd one before.

you are allowed up to a maximum of 5mm difference in tread depth between tyres on the same axle but they must be identical in all other respects.
