We are off a week tomorrow on our first trip to France with the caravan. We are booked in for all our nights in 4 different locations over three weeks. I am very excited and cant wait. Thinking the yvetot route to avoid rouen on the way down.
I am a bit worried about mossies as they like me, dont know if they are prevalent in France.
But my main anxiety is about our first night which will be an overnight stop, on the way to La Palmyre, and i havent got it booked.
Looking around Sees, so the clos normand site seems favourite, but i have emailed them 3 times to book it, and have had no reply.
Dont know whether to turn up there and see what there is (will be about 6pm), or whether to try on a services??. Or somewhere else. Just want to get past Rouen before we stop for the night and should land at Calais at 2pm.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Municipal campsites are often not set up to accept bookings. I don't know this one, but one we stayed on recently just had a chap turn up about 7.00 pm to collect fees from anyone who was there, and there was a notice on the board stating 'If no one has collected your fee before you leave, just pop the money in the honesty box in the wall'. People did, too!
There are municipal sites at Bernay which is between Rouen and Sees, at Gace (before you reach Sees) and Alencon (after Sees) so other options - and there will be privately run sites too. Generally campsites are quite well signposted, and it's usually easy enough to find a site from a main road (although not so easy from the autoroute). If you have a SatNav you should find it has POI's for campsites somewhere in the 'system' so when you need to stop just ask it to find one.
If you can get somewhere just a little earlier (say between 4 and 5pm) you should have no trouble finding a pitch, and if not then you could email the other alternatives and ask if they accept bookings, just to put your mind at rest.
We stayed at Sees in May, did not book. a very cheap municiple ideal for an overnight stop. A young lad was running the reception and there is a sign if he's not there to find a pitch and book in later. The town seemed a little tired not much going on but there where banners up for the Normandy celebrations. A small supermarket with a petrol station was across the road from the site.
Other recommendations are Beaumont sur Sarthe and Azay le Rideau But may be at bit further than you want to travel. If you are planning on going via Yvetot we have stayed at Camping St Claire at Neufchetel en Bray last year on our way to the Royan, it is approx 100miles from Calais but before Rouen. We have also used camping St Claire on our return leg.
Would really recommend going via Yvetot, even when the Rouen route has reopened we will carry on using the Pont de Brotonne find it far less stressful.

We did find the mozzies annoying around Royan/les Mathes in June, but only in the evening. We used Calypso after sun with mosquito repellant, and found it a very effective deterrent, applied after the last swim, say 6pm. Just wish I could remember where I bought it to get some more!!
Hi all.
We are going to Cognac in 3 weeks and looking at stopping off somewhere en-route. We are doing a night crossing, 12.30 am and looking at stopping at a service station soon after leaving Calais, any advice welcome. Then in the morning trundle south for a few hours the look for a site. Advice welcome please on a suitable site for family with 2 teenage girl!! Ideally somewhere will pool or lake/river swimming and bike rides.

Go on to Google maps along the route you are planning to take. Pick an area that is your limit for the day and put in campsites.
It will map campsites for you and some are smaller and more interesting. Then just check out reliability via the web and sites like this.
Municipal campsites don't take bookings in my experience, you just turn up. We have been to some lovely sites by just being adventurous and been pleasantly surprised.
there is also a website called camp in my garden that covers some parts of Europe, that may be interesting for you.
have fun.

Baie de Somme for the first night, the only service station many of us would stay at! Between Boulogne and Abbeville on the A16.
I would recommend this one as wel, we stop there every time we go via Calais. I think it is safer than some campsites.

IF you are using a sat nav beware that they will often route you through the tunnels in Rouen. these tunnels are too low for caravans & once entered it is almost impossible to reverse out or turn round so be on your guard

Thanks for the overnight stop advice, I already had Baie de Somme in mind should we go on the 12.30 crossing but we hope to get to Dover early, have all fingers crossed and try and get an earlier crossing, even with a caravan! If so, is there anywhere further down the A16 or A28 where someone has stopped and is suitable. Then, depending on how far we get, stop for a few nights at a nice but not too commercial campsite, we think we might be between Le Mans to Tours? Then finish at Cognac, hoping to then spend some time at Royan, Aubeterre sur Dronne which I understand has good swimming/pools. Any thoughts welcome.
We have stayed at a few overnight stops on route to Royan which are aound Le Mans and Tours.
Beaumont Sur Sarthe, lovely municiple next to a river. supermarket with petrol station a few minutes away.
Municiple at Chinon, next to a river with the chateaux on the other side looks fabulous lit up in the evenings.
Azay le Rideau easier to get to than Chinon, has a outdoor pool on its doorstep which campers can use free of charge, I am sure there is a tennis court too. Chateaux is five minutes walk into the small town.

What road are these tunnels on please? The tunnels on the A28 coming into Rouen are fine for caravans, and the only tunnels I've ever heard mentioned as being too low for caravans are those on the western section of the A86 around Paris.
