Hi folks,

I'm looking for some advice on booking a ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam next summer. We are just home from our first two week break on the continent and desperate to get back. Thought it would be an idea to book early for the ferry but the price at the moment is £200 more than we paid to go this year. This year we booked in January. Anyone got any advice/discount codes available?
Cheers
Susan

No, but I would seriously wait until January again.  That's in the winter period when ferry companies are. desperate to get some cash in, and often make 'Start of year offers' which give a really good saving.  Just plan everything else, and then book the ferry later.

Ours was cheaper this year by booking 11 months in advance, rather than in January as we did last year. We've also got an outside cabin both ways so wont be in the bowels of the ship either!

Book as early as you can to take advantage of a deal. We booked in February and whilst it was expensive we would have paid anther £250 if we'd waited until June. Booking early has eant we can go CLUB,eat in the restaurant and enjoy some luxury at waht would have been a pretty average crossing for the same money had we waited too long.

It is also worth challending P & O if they send out offers and you have already booked.

I was a little miffed that we paid £600 then was offered a £20 voucher ifwe booked.....P & O KINDLY gave us vouchers to use against our breakfast. Breakfast in the restuarant is advisabel as you are seatwed at a booked time and not queuing.......people queue forever when they dine in the cafe.

Since 2008 we have always booked our July Dover-Dunkerque crossing in October when the NEC show is on, although you do not need to go to the show to get the offer, as the promo code is always posted on here, usually by Val.

For the prices have been slowly going up, back in 2008 the return crossing for Car+Trailer (Caravan) was £59 for this year it was £79 so can't grumble at that.

Having said that we would love to do Newhaven - Dieppe as it puts in the right spot, and saves going via the Dartford Crossing.

But at £280 and only two crossing per day each way at 4 hours, it is a no brainer to stick with Dover.

The Tunnel is another contender but as we don't get Tesco points, the £300 return cost rules it out.

Francais,

We managed to get the DFDS offer for the Portsmouth - Le Havre crossing and they were happy to apply the offer to our trailer rather than a caravan. Will be worth doing as we don't require overnight hotels. Just checked the price for Saturday's departure (£592 with cabin outwards and seats back) - we got it, with cabins both ways, for £200 using the offer. Definitely worth the extra £120 to avoid the M25 and hotel stays. If I remember correctly, I think the offer only applied to a Saturday out and Wednesday return!

P & O often do offers on the Hull - Zeebrugge crossing but these oftenm have date restrictions and do not apply to the average traveller going to Europe for a few weeks.

Hull - Zeebrugge is very popular with weekend traffic to Belgium, so we tend to travel on the Thursday night to avoid the noise17

Thanks Robbo.
DFDS now run the Newhaven-Dieppe crossing, so I am hoping that there may be some offers forthcoming.

Probably wishful thinking though.

Coming from the the NWest I would have thought you'd go from the nearest ferry port !!!!!

Why on earth would you endure going so far South to get to France......believe me it is worth the extra money. Just imagine NO Dartford Tunnel , NO M25, no southern accensts to translate 17
