We usually camp in France and just point the car in the direction where the good weather is. France has thousands of campsites and we usually go in the second two weeks of august and have never had any trouble finding a good site. Even when we camped in the South of France we managed to find a reasonably priced site with spaces.
We are thinking of going somewhere different this year. We looked at Germany, but the weather seems to be a bit like our weather so we thought we'd try Austria.
Does anyone know if you should book beforehand? If we can possibly not book, that's what we'd prefer and take pot luck as, for us, that adds to our holiday .
Has anyone any experience of doing this? Many thanks in advance.

We have wandered through France, Germany, Switzerland & Austria most years in August, never booked, never slept in the car,but then we do tend to head for the hills, literally that is.
We give ourselves a 'latest' time in the day to start looking.
Naturally every year is different & more people appear to be camping these last few years, but we still wont be booking.
BTW Austria is lovely, go visit the grossglockner, it's a toll road but IMOP worth it.
On experience weather in Germany is better than the UK and France. It is a huge country so weather can vary to where you go. We had high 20 and low 30's when we were there in June. Austria is similar weather to Southern Germany and Southern Austria has Mediterranean Climate in the Summer we had high 20's in May. If August Campsites could be full.
