Just back from 2 weeks in France. After an eventful drive down to the tunnel (6 hours from Birmingham and armageddon thunder storms) we headed into France with plans for 2 weeks of touring the West Coast - until that is we found a gem of an aire, / site that was too good to leave.
The motorhome aire at St Denis, Ile D'oleron is a former municiple campsite with a free of charge (dated but acceptable) shower and toilet block and free of charge EHU (5 Amp) to most pitches. The aire takes up to 175 motorhomes and allows awnings and cooking outsides etc so feels like a campsite. it is a 15 minute walk into the town serviced by a daily market and a Super U, it is a few minutes further walk to the port and beaches and the area is also serviced by some very picturesque cycle routes. - The cost for this is a whopping €9.00 per unit per night. With the weather so good you can imagine it was just too good to leave.
The Ile D'Oleron was very pleasant - very similar to the Ile De Ré but less up it's self and without the €15 bridge toll.
Rather like the Ile De Ré I suspect your enjoyment of the island depends very much on the weather but thankfully we enjoyed fine weather for the length of stay.
We ventured to a very similar sounding aire at Chateau D'oleron (another old campsite) but it didn't really compare so we returned back up to St. Denis,
All in all over 15 nights in aires and one municiple campsite we spent just shy of £100 on accommodation and with diesel costing around £1.00 per litre this year (supermarkets) we feel like we've enjoyed somewhat of a bargain - Happy days! We spent the day yesterday getting the van "battle ready" for our next adventure(s) - maybe a UK weekend or two but with our stop over aires in France costing between €0 and €3.50 per night for 4 people and cheap diesel it is almost as cheap to head back to France.
Oh well, back to work but far more tanned and relaxed (although maybe a few pouns heavier) than my last working Day ;).
Guy.

We are off to Ile D'Oleron next week. Can you recommend any beaches please?
They look to be nice but like Ile de R e some look seaweeds or rocky and we need sandy for body and skim boarding.
Thanks
Jo

Many of the beaches are indeed a bit Seaweedy or rocky - St Georges or Le Grand Plage a the largest Sandy Beaches, Les Huttes was also nice as indeed was Brees les Bains. - the sea breeze can be quite chilling when you are in the water so rash vests for the kids are a good idea.
The Island is pretty easy to explore by car (and bike) and high / low tides times vary quite dramatically around the island.
None of the beaches were particuralry busy so you will be sure of a laid back holiday.
Where a bouts on the island are you staying?

Thanks for the tips Guy.
We are near St Georges at a site with access to the beach but not sure which beach it is.
The aim is to hire bikes and explore so will go to St Georges beach and up to Les Huttes.
We can't wait!

We used to use a beach just south of Bree, when we rented a static at St George's. Was very long, sandy and unspoilt. Good parking, though we used bikes.
Been visiting Oleron on and off for 30years,first by bicycle, then car and tent then Motorhome then Mobile.Like the sea/beach,the light, the cycle lanes.
Love the municipal (les pines) just outside la continere, you camp right on the beach there.Still very French I presume, ive never come across any Brits camping at the Municipal.Blimey its 10 years since I stayed on Oleron and 7 since i visited.Time just whizzes past.
