The last two posts are correct. That's the situation but it certainly shows how many folk have misinterpreted the legislation. You will find that cops will not know unless they are traffic type cops but it's pretty widely believed that this law is not being enforced because as already pointed out, it is a bit silly with small light cars able to tow fairly big 'vans faster than big heavy cars can tow small light trailers.

However we are quite happy tootling along at 80/90 kph on our
holiday.

Edit: Agreed re speed stickers - not required on UK vehicles

Yep that sure is a strange law, when say a Range Rover is not permitted to tow my Trailer at 81mph like what I do, but I am.

Having said that, plenty of Range Rovers etc towing all manner of stuff, would quite often whizz by me whilst I was doing 81mph in the slow lane.

I don't believe this is new legislation though. It was the same rules last summer when we went to France. I checked and our Ford Galaxy exceeded the gross train limit so it applied to us.

The speed limits are compulsory but the stickers are not.

No the limits aren't new, I advise against the stickers....not required and would be bit galling if you accidentally snuck up to 100 kph and went passed an unmarked Gendarme.....who then sees your 90kph sticker

Law is silly and the French seem to take a fairly pragmatic approach to it. We have French friends who tow their box trailer around at 130 kph with a car with a GTW >3500 and they've got away with it so far.

We used to be legit with a Focus Estate but then a Passat and now a Mazda 6 has tipped us over the edge......although the trailer has remained the same!

Last summer Calais to the Vendee ~400 miles. We stuck to the rule and overtook a total of 4 vehicles over the entire journey!
