We are thinking of visiting Le Teday at Lacanau in September and someone told us to use the ferry from Royan to Le Verdun (I think). Would it be worth using and how much does it cost for a car and caravan? It seems to avoid going through Bordeaux. Plus I,ve seen some good reviews of this area, its one we haven't visited before. Any comments gratefully received.

Cost for car, caravan & 2 people is about £50 each way. queues can be lengthy during peak holiday periods but in September it should be ok.

It is a lovely area and worth a visit but many consider the ferry expensive.

We are just on our way back from le Tedey. Site good- big, but our pitch was well situated. Some new toilet blocks better than the older ones. Shop is good. Croissant man is chirpy, ladies on tills bit miserable but hey ho! ( no loo roll )
It's a lovely area- great beaches- but usually a bit of a trek over sand dunes to get to.
Lake Lacanau is good- lots of different water sports.
We had heard of nightmare stories of traffic around Bordeaux - it wasn't as bad as we'd been told. The ring road can be slow in parts but it does keep moving. Worth visiting Bordeaux on a Sunday- much quieter and a great market on the quai.
We used the N10 from Poitiers which brings you just north of Bordeaux. This saves a huge wedge of tolls and is an excellent road. From the N10 to turn off to Lacanau on the Bordeaux free autoroute/ring road approx 30 minutes.
We went up to point de grave and watched the royan ferry. Seems excellently organised and reasonably quick but no idea of price sorry.

Btw... Watch out for the falling pine cones. They can come down with a big clunk.
Amazingly a squirrel dropped its half munched pinecone on my dad's tent this morning. He found it inside his tent. The fact it was half munched turned it into a torpedo which managed to rip the tent. I kid you not!

Hi - we've just come back up from the Gironde - went down via Bordeaux and back on the ferry from Pointe de Grave to Royan - cost about 58 euros for car, caravan and three people - cut so much time off the trip, drove up and straight on to the ferry, it was about 11am Sunday the week before last. Great trip, felt it was worth the cost and would definitely do again.
