We usually drive down from the Midlands, stay over in Calais, then carry on to the Vendee the next day, then do the whole thing over in reverse.
We now have to decide if we do the same, or do a longer ferry crossing, possibly overnight, in October, risking the Autumn equinox storms.

You cannot be serious? Do you think they are going to eat you? Its just a few rather dirty Africans wandering about. If you are worried about staying in Calais then just drive a few miles out.

We drove south on the N1 south of Boulogne on the 27th of August. On the opposite carriageway, ie heading north towards Boulogne and Calais, we saw 2 men of apparent Eastern European origin, jumping out in front of approaching cars, apparently trying to stop them. We saw that 3 times whilst approaching the point they were at. Cars swerved to avoid them, presumably they were trying to get to Calais and onwards to the UK. Never seen that before there, and we have travelled that route for many years.

I don't know if some people are dirty or not & I wouldn't like to speculate.

Last year we did the Ouistream crossing in October & caught the equinox storms . Actually, none of us were sick, but it was pretty rough. I had to stay in our cabin because I have mobility problems & can't walk around a rolling ship. Many people were ill on board, which made the communal areas unpleasant.

If Calais is a bit unsafe at the moment, especially for overnight stops, what are the best alternatives?

How far south of Calais would you recommend we travel, bearing in mind that we've travelled down from the Midlands?

Thanks

Half an hour should do it. Just down as far as Boulogne. If you are in a motorhome there is an aire de campingcar in Le Portel well off the beaten track. here

Ah well, we'll just let the sweet little doggy have a look when we come out from the Pet Passport place at the Tunnel

Seeing that the sweet little doggy works Cattle weighing upwards of 500lbs and more, I'm sure (I know ) that he will make very short work of any hangers on
