We are getting the overnight ferry that arrives in Caen at 6am ish and overnighting just north of Limoges. I would like a two/three hour stop off an route for baguettes, fresh air, something to see and ideally a free playground/park for kids to let off steam. Any recommendations? What's central Tours like? We could go to Amboise where I know there's a good park but fancy trying somewhere new.

Azay le Rideau - small chateau, nice town, plenty shops cafés and restaurants all in a small area. Not sure about the playground but I bet there is one
Thanks Ken. A playground or some kind of cheap/free, child friendly activity is really essential or our children will moan more out of the car than in it. Villandry looks good or the botanical gardens in Tours. Has anyone been to either?
Tours is a big city with big traffic. I think the driver as well as the children might moan if you went there for a picnic stop, though I don't know the botanical garden there.
Villandry is a very formal garden with immaculate complex hedged beds of plants. It is not a run around on the grass under the trees sort of garden.
Quite close to Villandry is the chateau garden at La Chatonniere - a little known gem without crowds. One of our own favourites and if you are specifically looking for a garden visit that might suit you. But it's a garden not a playground - no swings, slides or ice cream. And it's not free of charge.

Not free, but there is a kids outdoor play park called lulu parc just outside Tours. It's got tons for the kids to do and lots of nice rocking deckchairs for the adults to have a rest on. Even maybe for the driver to grab 40 winks. Also has a snack bar and free parking.
Guess it depends how much you want to tire the kids out and if you think it's worth the money.
7,50 € per child
2,50 € per adult lulu parc
Not sure if its too late and you're already in France but we found a lovely playground/picnic/Aires next to a lake on the way to chinon. Its called lac mousseau and its near a place called Avoine. You could easily spend a morning there. Lots of wooden play structures, swinging tyres, and zip wire. Picnic benches nearby and lake to walk around. Its got good parking and wasn't busy at all.
