The terms and conditions for ADAC which I read - admittedly in an unofficial translation from German - said that in an eventuality like that ADAC would "organise" the return of the car by a contractor. It didn't seem clear to me who was paying for that. Is this what Saftlad is grappling with?

Possibly, but the letter is less than clear and reliant on Google translate. The letter refers to "engine removal and cleaning", neither of which has happened, certainly not with my approval.
Are you suggesting that Adac can refuse to repatriate the car themselves and instead pass on any costs?
I want a full breakdown from Adac of what these costs are before I agree to paying anything, as I believe my membership (Adac Plus) should have covered breakdown recovery and repatriation as it was not fixable within 3 days.
Has anyone thought of a nationwide bank account which has full European breakdown cover included? It works out at £10 per month which is roughly what the ADAC cost? Just thinking about it at the moment but would love to hear people's views.

Spoke with ADAC this morning. Seems the letter was sent in error, the breakdown has no outstanding balance showing on it.
That's a relief!
Did the letter come from ADAC or perhaps a scam?
