Up to eight hours drive from Calais and near a beach?
Well that's anywhere from the Vendee on the west of France up to the northern shores of the Netherlands - about a thousand miles of coast to choose from. I don't think any of us can tell you where you would like best - we don't know your tastes I'm afraid.
The Vendee normally, but not always, has decent weather and balmy evenings - if by good for families you mean bucket and spade beaches and safe, flat cycle tracks the Ile de Ré just of the coast of La Rochelle can be idyllic but if you are unlucky with the weather can be too quiet.
You could also head for Lac Annecy (not by the sea though) in the Alps for stunning scenery and swimming in the clear warm lake more than makes up for not being on the coast. - Camping Lac Bleu in Doussard is a family friendly site with a pool and direct lake access. It is also adjacent to a cycle path that is suitable for children that follows the lake all the way up to Annecy town.
It may be worth scouring the Eurocamp website for ideas regarding regions and then look on here for the best site reviews.
------------- It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.
We're going to the vendee tomorrow for the first time, we've been to France 4 years but never this part. The beaches look big and sandy, the sites seem to be well equipped with water slides etc, there's loads to choose from. The weather for the next 5 days is 22-24c which is perfect for our daughter who has red hair and suffers with heat rashes when it's too hot. There's lots of places to go and I will let you know more when I get back after 1st Sept. Our friends go to this area every year and love it but iv also been told it's not as pretty as some parts of france. We're sailing to caen coz it's easier to get there but you can do it from calais with a stopover.
Oh and it's worked out a cheap holiday because we are going last 2wks in August were using camping cheques to pay for the site for a wk and these were bought with the ferry so for ferry over to caen with 7 cheques it's cost £340 then all we pay is €6 per nt supp for kids and €30 p nt for 6 nights so just over £600 for 13 nights and around 250 miles to travel from caen so saving on fuel towing.
Hi sally sharp..get everyone in your party to say top requirements for a great holiday then post list on here!!..we'll all see if we have anything in our past holiday memory to suit!

the vendee has hundreds of campsites to choose from, we have our static at le ragis, challans, which might be suitable after many improvements over the winter, covered pool, tarmacced roads etc.
I would stay away from the orouet end of st jeans de monts, but the vendee has hundreds of camp sites that would more then meet your needs, I would suggest you pick an area/town first and work from there
we went to the vendee and loved it around 8hrs with the van inc pit stops with a lil girl age 4 . my only worry was it was a long two days for our lil girl. 4 hrs to newhaven 4 hr crossing then the 8 hr drive.
------------- Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to carry on in spite of it.
I'm going on Wednesday via calais with a overnight stop at beumont sur sarthe,we've got two boys aged 5 and 3 and have been camping in England for the last couple of years for weekends.our last two holidays we've been to two yello village sites in the south of France doing the fly drive thing,in may on our way home we were delayed for 8 hours at Montpellier airport and sat under a tree in the car park it was a mare,I told my wife never again and that camping was the way forward,we recently had 4 nights at the dower house which went well except now she says if this is us for the next few years she wants a caravan,I can't win
