I have just returned from lac de orient near Troyes.....I was absolutely covered in insect bites from day 1 even though I was wearing repellent . Is there any part of France that is notoriously better for insects than others...I can't go through 14 sleepless nights scratching again....

We were near a lake for two weeks and had only the odd bite after using smidge.
In fact we found it so effective it was very noticeable if we forgot to put it on as insect homed in on us.
Get it on ebay, good value, gives 8 hour protection and doesnt stink like deet.
Try Avon Skin so Soft. Recommended by Scots for midges.
I put some on in the Scottish Highlands last month. No bites. 40 year old son didn't bother. Lots of bites.
Worked for me.

A lot depends on the campsite location, campsites down on the Med can be just as bad as anywhere.
We visited friends at Camping du Pylon at Biot near Antibes, back in July, and they were hunkered down in the static, trying to avoid the little blighters.
Our campsite 30 miles up the coast at Roqubrune-sur-Argens was mozzie free.
Having said that we do have quite an armoury of anti mozzie weaponry to hand!
