We have cruised to Norway three times so are aware just how expensive it is. Pack plenty of food, or stay east so you can get into Sweden when you need food (its what locals do). Eating out is so expensive, i.e. Small takeaway pizza £20, Burger King advertise a whopper is "only" £11! Fuel isn't too bad, 10-15p or so a litre more than UK.

Campsites we have seen look amazing, well looked after and in great locations. Eastern areas are drier, fjords are simply stunning and the main Fjord ports which are all stunning aren't too far apart by road, which are quiet and well maintained, they are also masters of tunnelling, 5+ miles is quite normal! Gerainger would be on my list, but if you can find some days when no ships are in port it will be much quieter, or stay a few days and enjoy the place after the ships have gone.

Stavanger is a beautiful place, Oslo worth visiting.   Alesund is a pretty town and handy for the Troll Road and Troll wall.

We have just come back from Norway. Check out an Auto pass box for toll roads before you go. We didn't need to use a car but understand that you need one so you can be automatically charged for using the roads. Can confirm that the country is very spectacular but very expensive one pint costs the equivalent of £10. Food, clothes etc seem to be about double the cost here. There are a lot of Motorhomes on the roads so you shouldn't have any trouble when you get there. The campsite at Gerainger is right on the edge of the Fford and would definitely be worth staying at if you get the chance.

The ski area Trysil has a gorgeous campsite at the bottom of the main slope. Fantastic location for summer for walking mountain biking etc
The area is stunning.

Thanks for the tips will definately take lots of food stuffs and drinks , we are always torn between cooking our own food and sampling the local cuisine but looks a bit costly, will look into the tolls.

We travelled to Norway, via Denmark and returned through Sweden in 2008 with our folding camper...you can read more about it in our blog...http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog/thetravelmoores/2/tpod.html

We found the roads a bit narrow and hairy so only drove half our normal distance in any one day, plus we kept stopping to take in the spectacular views. The campsite at Laerdal was excellent and you can visit Flam with its' railway, the Laerdal Tunnel, as well as a fjord cruise all from there.

We took as much coffee, cereals, wine as we could carry as they are all quite expensive. Eating out was restricted to lunch-time set menus, or the buffet menu at the salmon farm. These were comparable to a good meal back at home.

Make sure you start each day's travel with a full fuel tank! Petrol stations are few and far between and mostly unmanned. If you want to go right up North, the drive in Sweden is easier for the longer distances.

We would love to go again now that we have a motorhome, towing was a bit of a white-knuckle adventure.

If we can be of any further help, please contact us.

Thanks Travelmoores
I have just had a chat with someone who said progress is slower than planned due to the numerous ferries and scenic stops . Some of the roads look a bit too steep with hairpin bends for our tag axle motorhome we will have to research suitable routes .
Thanks for the tips.

Just be careful with what you take into the country as there are some quite strict limitations on some items (Non EU Country) How strictly the rules are applied I have no idea but came across them when doing some research. If they go to Sweden to shop perhaps a lot of blind eyes are turned!!!

Thats why you cant take potatoes! but you can take meat, ham cheese wine etc. There is a very good EU website where everything is listed.

We found the people very friendly and of course all spoke excellent English.
When I was researching I didn't think we were be able to travel very far, but was surprised how good the roads were. There were a few toll roads, but it seemed a bit complicated, so we didn't bother with investigating further. About a month after we got home we had a bill for about £18. Think we did a couple of hundred miles.
If I was going to go again I would go earlier in the year (we went 2nd half August) as sites were starting to close down and I think the waterfalls would be more impressive as the snows melt.
