The sites close to villages, or actually in the villages, are the municipals - though some are privatised now - but by and large the local mayors and councils set up sites in the best positions long ago.
I'd suggest to you that instead of choosing a site you first of all choose the particular area / town / village where you want to be - and nine times out of ten there will be a decent , clean, respectable campsite there. Our rule of thumb is that the smarter the village the smarter the municipal site,

Camping Portland in Port en Bessin. Stayed there last year - great campsite, great facilities, coastal walkway down to village approx 800m away. Great location for exploring all the D-Day sights.

Lots of choices of municipal sites here. Have a look at some of them - they will almost always be on the edge of a small village or town.

We stayed at 2 good village campsites this year...Le Champ de Course st Courseulles sur Mer and the municipal at Etretat.
Both were easily walkable to each village and worth looking at. I registered the Etretat site on UKCS as soon as we got home but it hadn't appeared at my last check so I haven't been able to review it yet.
Etretat was a lovely, older village with loads of shops and places to eat and has a pebbly beach with amazing cliffs on either side.
Courseulles was 'Juno' beach and is more modern but still bustling and has a massive sandy beach and a small harbour/marina.

Lyon la Foret, walk to lovely village with local shops including small grocery store. Need a car for supermarket.
