We did quite a bit of touring around France when my kids were younger, (between 7 and 12).

We had a campervan and a couple of pop ups for the kids. We never booked anything except the first few nights sometimes, in France.

The highlight of the holiday was always when we found a site with a pool. Some of the best in France have pools with slides and a bit of kids entertainment but no UK holiday companies. No Eurocamp etc.

My kids liked Camping Les Fuvettes in the Jura. It cost much less than a site which catered for UK packages but still had a great pool,lake beach and kids disco.

Edit to say this is only about 5 years ago.

Changes with the age of kids,now i have 4 teens they dont seem to make friends with foreign children as easily as when they were less self councious.

I have good looking identical twins who get really annoyed with being starred at and commented on when in France while they find the more reserved Germanic people ignore them.They loved Switzerland this year.They kept saying "no one takes any notice of us here".
