We are driving through France to Spain next month (first time in motorhome) and will be stopping at a couple of aires on the way.
I've got the french camping car app on my phone which seems ok and I've found two aires that we might use.

My question is, do you think it would be worth buying 'all the aires book' as a back up? Also are there more aires in it than the app?

Hard copy works all the time, a phone might not. I'd buy the book. Having said that if you are just driving through France you can stop overnight anywhere, town carparks & supermarket carparks are safe enough but if you really must stop on actual aire de campingcars then get the book, I would.

We are only stopping to get a bit of rest over night so don't need any facilities. Everybody says just GO don't worry, I suppose as a Brit it's been drummed into me that if you park somewhere you get fined, period.
I think we will just park where we can, if the locals don't mind

I think being sensible about parking "anywhere" is probably the key! Remote locations with no one around you just need to be sensible and take sensible precautions. Crime happens anywhere even when your brain is on holiday mode

I would probably buy the book as just nice to have a physical hard copy and it may help you find some gems.

I wouldn't buy the book for your trip in October but wait until the next edition for 2015 comes out – I think it's later this year and will probably have some more additions and a few taken out that have closed.

What route are you taking down to Spain - perhaps someone can give a few ideas where to stop off?

Do NOT stop overnight at the Motorway Aires – they are generally unsafe at night and should be only used for short daytime stops.

Designated Motorhome (Camping Car) Aires are in almost every town and village throughout France and you should have no trouble finding them.

We have only been motorhoming for a year and invested in the book for our summer hols. Found it really useful as we didn't always know where we wanted to go and used the map showing the aires so we could plan our routes.

We had the map out the other day and have decided to go the Rouen, Orleans, route so we go over the fancy bridge (can't remember the name of it) and the toll roads seem fewer.
We have found 3 aires we like the look of on google street view and I took the co-ordinates off the bottom of the screen so I think we will be fine.
We did see the new book can be pre ordered soon so we'll wait for that.

Keith is it you that made the tunnel crossing video? We watched it a couple of months ago and found it helpful for us novices. We ended up booking With 'My ferry Link' though, as it was half the price.

Keith, how wide are the toll barrier car lanes at Dartford? That was a tight squeeze. Our van is 2.2 m wide with mirrors folded.
Also is it ok to go through the car lanes or was that a bit naughty?

Lorries fit through the manned lanes at Dartford so any motorhome or caravan will be fine.

our caravan is 2.3m wide and we go through just fine. Some of the ones in France appear slightly narrower than those at times but always fit through

I was referring to Keith's video, he goes through a car lane because the lorry ones are tailing back. The car lanes are narrower and they have to fold in their mirrors and drive in carefully.

The video 'Dartford Tunnel – a Tight Squeeze' is to show all sensible people with a Motorhome, or caravan, that trying to get through a 'Car only' Toll booth lane is not a clever thing to do – and it's the last time we will attempt it!

There are big changes soon to the Dartford Crossing payment system so keep your eyes peeled next time you venture across the Thames at that point.

Our van (coach built boxer) doesn't bulge out after the cab like most do so might fit through a little easier. I'm not going to try though, we'll have plenty of time to queue, if there is one, that is.
