Hi all, just a word of warning, having returned from touring France using our Three contracted phone where we could use our British data package in France at no extra cost was horrified to find an extra £20 on my bill. It turns out that the extra expense wasnt from use in France but data used on-board ship (DFDS

Moral of the story is to turn off "Roaming" when NOT in a "Feel at home Country"

Good post O.P. i presumed it just changed mid channel to a French (free) service.

I did make great use of the three service while recently in France and Switzerland using close to 200 mins and a gb of data (let the kids use my phone for free internet) with no nasty shocks.

Not on the Pompey-Le Havre route. Signs all over the tub saying 'No Free Wi Fi'.

Not that it matters - another 3 months and there won't even be a boat!

Thanks for the warning, must admit that I did not think about turning roaming off on way across the channel but got away without extra charges. Must say having 3G throughout France has been a real joy especially when using the translation app, especially when an emergency dental appointment was required, as my French is almost non existent!

On the Dov-Dunc DFDS ferry your phone will go on a 'ships network' somewhere in the middle of the crossing. Your phone will will bleep when this happens & a message will be briefly displayed so you could miss it. If you use your phone on this network it will cost a fair bit. This will be the reason for the extra bill. One needs to be aware of this & avoid using phone including receiving calls while on the ships network.

A similar thing happened to me on the Holyhead-Dublin ferry, we sailed close to the Isle on Man and it decided to touch base en route and I received a bill for 'data roaming' although I didn't actually use my phone at all.
