My older daughter will start school next year so it is our last opportunity to go in low season (end of June). Since we have never been to Italy (family with 2 girls, next year will be 2 & 4) I was wondering if you could recommend a place that ticks the boxes below:

Location
-ideally on the coast (sandy beach is a must), would consider mountains if very scenic but would then need a stream or lake (but not Lake Garda) as I would not want to be tied to a noisy pool all day
- I would like to fly but avoid renting a car so would need decent public transport to visit a few old cities and also avoid spending a fortune on transfers from the airport, shops nearby or easy to get to by bus
I was thinking of Central Italy or Sardinia

Activities
-not too many, a mini disco etc is a big no no, would prefer something quieter, toddler friendly

I checked a few companies like Roan (no mention of cookers in their tents?), Canvas Holidays etc. I would also consider hotels or appartments if not too expensive. Any recommendations?

Roan Holidays tents have a four burner hob in each tent.

Eurocamp Holidays used to indicate which of their sites were suited to public transport, but I haven't looked at their website to see if this is still the case.

You could stay on the Adriatic Riviera, take a boat to Venice, and then get a train from there to several other cities, such as Verona.

There are lots of campsites in the lido de jesolo area, quite near the airport, with beaches and various accommodation, from touring pitches, to ready erected tents to challets/cabins.
As already stated, easy boat into Venice and the other islands.

You could look at Venue holidays, they have some really got sites near Venice, which you could do without a car.

Having been to Italy (Florence and Venice) last month I'd advise you to consider hiring a car.

Public transport is very good - frequent and relatively inexpensive. However, they will pack buses to their absolute capacity - can be like travelling on the London Underground in rush hour. I certainly wouldn't want to try lugging two young kids and all my luggage onto a packed bus at an airport for a longish journey in temperatures typically 25C.

I'm no expert but from what I've looked at Italian campsites tend towards the large, holiday park type. We have been to Park Albatross - very large site, lots of cabaret style entertainment in August and need a car to get to best beaches - and also Le Pianacce which is much smaller but you would I think need a car and there is a daily mini disco in high season despite the site being generally much more low key. We really liked Le Piannace and are going back next Aug. We've not stayed there but have used the beach club at www.campingetruria.it. I don't know how lively/toddler friendly it is but it is right on the beach.
