The Caravan Club /DFDS show deal is not quite as good as it seems.

For my particular dates DFDS quote £128 return

Caravan Club are quoting £147.80 or 15.5% dearer.

So the much vaunted 25% is off their original, higher figure.

This is still a saving of £17 (14%) but does seem unnecessarily underhand promotion.

If you can use the time restrictions, the Camping Cheque offer of £120 return , including 3 camping cheques, is by far the best offer at the moment.

DFDS were cheaper for a solo car, yesterday, than the Caravan Club, but we think we may have to take our second caravan to France for our first holiday next year - complications with an essential service date, and other things................ so we're still looking for a cheap deal.  With DFDS the sailings we wanted with the caravan were £99.00 outwards and £109 return!

As I said in another post somewhere, gone are the days of the £38 return crossing for a car, or £58 for car and caravan in low season, and just £20 more for high season!  And those previous NEC offers were for any date, any sailing, and with free amendments!

I wonder just how much trade DFDS will lose - we've gone back to P and O for our last two crossings, solo car, and both have been cheaper and quicker than DFDS.

Edit:  Just checked the Caravan Club website, and the fare for our dates, for car and caravan would be £167.40, with DFDS still £109 and £99.  The Caravan Club is is cheaper than their weekend price so must include the 25% off offer.  For just a car DFDS want £88.00 and the Caravan Club £70.20.  With the EBIRTH code DFDS would be £70.20 for the car, but isn't available with a caravan.

P and O Ferries fares are not available yet!  I'm not sure of their marketing strategy - they say they're not announcing next years fares until the end of October.  Perhaps they'll judge at that time how many people have booked with DFDS and either make a stunningly cheap offer or price their ferries even higher!  Any gamblers out there willing to take the risk of waiting until the end of October for P and O prices?

We are the ultimate cheapskates and would always choose the cheapest crossing possible with DFDS and had a few years of paying the £38 as we only take a car. The prices mentioned this year are starting to make us consider the tunnel for its quickness and convenience! I think DFDS will be struggling, although I suppose Dunkerque is mainly freight, be interesting to hear if their prices have risen as much in the last 10 years.

For us before towing the Tunnel was an easy choice for us for speed and price if using the old 4x Tesco vouchers

As prices double on the Tunnel when towing, whilst its still our preferred choice, we certainly look at going maybe at least one way on a cheap ferry (often go out on tunnel and come back ferry)

Not sure we will bother with show offer this year and will see what is around maybe when P&O release prices

Stena Line from Harwich to Hook of Holland with 10 camping cheques is showing at £282.80 on the CC web site so that's £133.30 for the ferry and that crossing is 6 1/2hrs. Odd

So anyone coming for the north or north west could benefit from that deal

Same details as above with Brittany ferries to Caen works out at £247.80 (ferry) slightly more expensive but think of the fuel/toll savings if going down the western side of France.

People need to do their homework other routes may work out better than Dover/Calais.

DFDS my suffer.

You're right Harry - at those prices (which are so hugely different from last year) then I think DFDS will suffer.  Mind you, we did speak to an operator at DFDS who said they were concentrating on freight traffic and caravans could only use selected crossings during the week - which may be why their website shows so many unavailable crossings.

Seriously tempted by the Harwich sailings - our dates too are just £133.15 for the ferry!  And less mileage!

Pierre - our crossings, Portsmouth/Caen, car and caravan are £358.00 but that includes 7 Camping Cheques, which we would use.  Those who can't use them can sell them for an agreed price.

However without the Camping Cheques the Caravan Club website is currently quoting just £228.00 for a return car and caravan Portsmouth/Caen crossing on our dates.

01 Apr 2015 Portsmouth - Caen

Dep: 14:45 Arr: 21:30

Duration: 5hr 45min

14 Oct 2015 Caen - Portsmouth

Dep: 08:30 Arr: 13:15

Duration: 5hr 45min

£228.00
However, a second check shows that route has just been removed from the options, so I suspect the price was incorrect!  Newhaven/Dieppe has also just been removed!  Something odd going on here!

According to someone who phoned the Caravan Club their special offers won't be available until 'later today'!  So much for the prices we've all seen this morning.

Sounds like 'Wait and See'.

When you join the voyager club does the discount include the spouse travelling with you for the breakfast deals? The Spain one is £100 and will save me £140 on the sailing alone.

I always remember to remove cookies when going back to the DFDS website, and others for that matter.

But even still, DFDS prices seem to change at random during the day even, obviously the website is volume driven.

I had a look at Eurotunnel, but even travelling at this time of the year (no July 2015 prices) the return cost for Car with RoofBox and Trailer is over £300 return, I know the tunnel is much faster, but as we will be on holiday, we prefer to take things more slowly in any case.

For that kind of money I would prefer to go Newhaven-Dieppe.

We paid £79 for this years July crossing, so I will be happy if I can get anything under £100 for next July, even without a deals that is quite possible.

Normally our ferry crossing for next year would be booked by now, but this time it is all work in progress.
