We took our first overseas holiday earlier this year to the Vendee. Two adults, two teenagers and two Labradors!
We took the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais and drove down to Le Mans for an overnight stop (about 6 hrs leisurely driving) at a Camping Castel and the next day onward to a site called Le Guyonniere on the Lac du Jaunay just outside Bretignolles sur mer. (about a three hour drive)
On the way back, we travelled via Normandy and stopped off for three days at another Camping Castel between Bayeaux and Caen (again, about a 6hr leisurely drive) before heading back to Calais via the Hornfleur/Le Havre route bypassing Rouen. (about 3.5hrs).
We found travelling on a Sunday incredibly relaxing. At times you could not see another vehicle at all either ahead of you or in your rear view mirrors on the Autoroute!
You will soon get the hang of driving on the 'wrong side' of the road. We bought a 'blind-spot' mirror to attach to the nearside (in France, the 'off-side') door mirror, but due to the angle of the mirror cowling and the fact that I am well over 6ft, did not afford the best of views for me but Mrs 'D' found it really useful - especially when joining a busy multi-lane road.
