We are thinking of going to the I'le de Re in May next year and are wondering about the toll on the bridge. Does anyone know if we can pay cash or does it have to be a card? We have had problems using our cards abroad in the past so generally take sufficient cash with us.

Also, if anyone has suggestions of aires to stop at we would be grateful....and anything that should be on our "must see" list. We will use our bikes to get around, or bus maybe to La Rochelle.

On the Ile de Re:

- watch the sunset from any of the beaches on the south side of the island.
- have an ice-cream at the harbourside in St Martin.
- have fresh seafood from one of the "cabanes".
- visit the market in Bois Plage.

Hello Hoedown, I'm afraid I can't answer your first question as we don't know the Ile de Re at all, but do know that bank cards - both credit and debit - from British banks do work well in Western Europe nowadays., either for payment or at ATM machines.

If you take one card each - different ones, and preferably ones without surcharges. - then you don't have to carry all your holiday funds with you in cash.

Good wishes to you.

Hi,

We stayed on the aire at the municiple campsite at Riverdoux Plage - The first resort over the bridge - it was very reasonable and allowed access to to the facilities. to is also a good base for cycling around the island and over the bridge to la rochelle.

Camping interlude also have a night-stop system for Motorhomes allowing you to park in a aire type area between 6pm and 10pm that was all quite reasonable and next to a great beach, - there is free daytime parking just up the road and still a 5min walk to the beach.
An alternative suggestion would be to venture a few miles further to the Ile D'oleron - at the north of the island at St. Denis is an old municiple campsite that is now a dedicated motorhome aire with 100 plus pitches and free hook up not to mention free hot (but dated) shower facilities for about €10 per night - we stayed here last year and it was motorhome heaven. - a 15-20 min walk or short cycle to the beach and the town has a nice harbour, daily market and carrefour express. in high season there is a daily bread van and twice weekly fish van that call on the aires.
Another favourite aire in the region is the Camping Car-park aire at Longville sur mer.

Enjoy your trip,

Guy.

I would recommend Ile d'Oleron in preference to Ile de Re. There's much more room to move on Oleron, nice beaches, plenty of places to park and it doesn't cost as much to get over the bridge (at the moment it is free, but a charge is being discussed). I can heartily recommend Camping Suroit.

Why people make a deal over the cost of the bridge is beyond me. You only usually need to pay once on your holiday - 16 euro the last time we went - a tiny fraction of the cost of the holiday.

We crossed a couple of weeks ago - only €8 and agree its neither here nor there as its a small price to pay for such a stunning little island.

Its depends what you want, for us Ile De Re was perfect as smaller than D'Oleron, more dedicated cycle paths, less housing etc.

We used the aire at St. Clement Des Baleines, great for a couple of days but from spring onwards the campsite next door is open too.

If you go to the island make sure to visit the two light houses a mile or so walk up the beach from Baleines, you can climb to the top if you have brave enough :)
