I'm after your collective wisdom....

Last year we took our caravan from Leeds - Dordogne via Dover/Calais. It was quite a trek with two small children, but we had a very good time. Because of school holidays we basically have to travel out at the end of July and come back mid August. Two things were an issue:

1. Driving to/from Dover. This was easily the most unpleasant part of the journey, next year we intend to go Hull-Zeebrugge. In our opinion it is worth the extra cost.

2. The weather. This was our first time in France over summer and the weather was poor. Certainly not the wall-wall sunshine we were hoping for. I know that last summer may not have been typical however we'd rather not go there again if there's iffy weather.

So, the whole point of this post... Given our intention to do Hull-Zeebrugge, what's the best way to get to the Cote d'azure? Do you recommend 1/2/3 overnight stops? Which bit is best to head for? Should we bother going that far?

I know a lot of the answers depend on the sort of thing we want in a holiday. First off I have no issue paying tolls and will happily motor along the autoroute missing all the scenic N roads. We went around Paris last time, it wasn't that bad but I'd avoid the Peripherique if we went that way again. We need somewhere which is good for very small children (like a beach...) and we like places in small towns/villages where there are some shops etc. we enjoyed Beaulieu sur Dordogne last year for that reason. Somewhere not too busy/noisy (small children you see). Oh, and decent weather!

Cheers, Median.

We were down at Roquebrune Sur Argens last July, and whilst the rest of France was seemingly being pummelled with bad weather, our weather was outstanding.

We always do the same route, Dunkerque, then straight onto the autoroute via the East route, so we pass Reims Troyes and Dijon etc, then straight through well under Lyon, along the autoroute du soliel named for obvious reason.

Macon would make for a good overnight campsite as there is a good municipal there, as we tow a trailer we do overnight hotel stops using the budget Premiere Classe hotels.

So next July will involve overnight stops at Dunkerque, Chalons Sur Saone and Salon de Provence for us. As we are returning to the same campsite at Roquebrune Sur Argens close to Frejus.

No need to go anywhere near Paris to go down to Med coast. From Zee just go down past Lille, Reims, Dijon, Lyon etc, all motorway. 1 or 2 stops should do it. Campsites on the route all the way down so make a list & stop when you are tired. Probably best chance of good weather around Med coast, can get very windy at times though but it will stay hot even if overcast. You are going in peak time though so expect crowds & heavy traffic. I'd just find a nice campsite nr beach & stop there rather than go on days out etc.

The Cote d'Azur is the eastern end of the Mediterranean, and is the crowded part.  There are plenty of other, less crowded areas, in Mediterranean France - though in August most will be busier than inland France.  If you can face the traffic then there's no doubt that the eastern Med is beautiful, as in the hinterland too!  Roquebrune/Frejus/St Raphael are popular areas, with nice beaches, and plenty of 'day out' options.

The western Med does become windy - something to do with the airflow over the Pyrenees and the cooling effect of the Med, but then so does a lot of Provence when the mistral blows.

However, one thing, last year's weather was very different and even down on the Med there wasn't as much sunshine as people were hoping for.  Weather patterns changed dramatically last year and many areas had more rain and cloud than normal.  Who knows what may happen next year.

If you can bear it, you could be radical and stay at much smaller sites, perhaps where you can find an inland lake or river beach (and there are some lovely ones), then just 'tour' and find the best weather without pre-planning or pre-booking.  We have friends who are teachers and they do that every year, starting when the schools close and going back just before GCSE results are announced - and they've never had problems finding sites to stay on.

We were near Beaulieu sur Dordogne towards the end of August - and guess what, it was raining!  We stayed two days in order to see the places we wanted to visit, and then moved south to the Ceze area where we had two weeks of very hot sunshine!  We hadn't booked in advance.

we went to Frejus this year and are going back next year. We did the motorway from Calais, through Dijon, Lyon all the way down. We have a 4 yr old and only did one overnight stop which is what we will do next year. Just needing to find a campsite near Lyon for on way down. We are in west Yorkshire and plan to stay overnight at Folkestone then catch 6:50 tunnel.
The weather this year was lovely, just had the rain once but had a bit of a storm one night.

Thanks for the advice. I'm open to staying in other areas as I'm not really looking forward to the drive (already!). Frejus looks like a good place although an inland lake or riverside would be fine for me as long as there was some sort of beach for the kids.

Not sure I'm quite brave enough to set off without booking sites, Val. We did that sort of thing when it was just me & Mrs Median, now we have the little ones we prefer a bit more security. The site we stayed at last year had loads for our little girl to do (Pool, play area, bouncy castle) and I'd like to have similar amenities if possible. Knowing that there's definitely something for her to do when we get there is a bonus.

Zozo - how long did it take you to get to Lyon?

Distance Zee-Lyon is about 500miles, all motorway apart from first few miles so you can do the maths at your towing speed. Doable in a long day provided road is clear but if you are driving on a Saturday in peak hol season there are bound to be holdups in places. If you are going to Med coast then if you want to stop at overnight campsites on way down then do 2 stops.

Book your main campsite but generally if you arrive at a camping municipal on the way down by late afternoon you will be ok. arrivals on these sort campsites often continue until 9pm & can become full before that.

Took us about 8hrs with breaks but we didn't have a caravan then. We have only just bought one, we had the tent before. We are planning on driving to Lyon but finding a campsite to stay. We want to get through Lyon though because it is busy first thing in a morning and don't fancy driving though with a caravan. We use the tolls all the way. It also was the last week in June when we set off to Frejus, this time it will be back end of July as our son has started school now.
We stayed at L'Etoile this year but next we're going to residence du campeur. Just seems to have more going on for a 5yr old.

As De Gaulle said, the rich turn left at Orange and the poor turn right.  So be prepared to pay over the odds in that area - and for it to be busy.  We find it so compared to the 'poor' section of the Med.  The weather has been poor north of Lyon over the last few years andthe south east has tended to be the best area for sun.  We had to put the heating on in the Perpignan area last year - unheard of in July.

We break the journey differently each time. We are lucky in that we travel outside peak times so don't have to book.
We have stopped in Metz at the municipal, Mersault, Chalons sur Soane, and Orange.
We didn't enjoy the Cote d'Azur at all when we were there. Congested and expensive. We spent most of our time inland up in the mountains. On the other hand we loved Narbonne. lovely free beaches and much less glitzy.

Strangely alan29 we found Frejus to be surprisingly quiet for the Middle two weeks of July when we were there this year.

Admitadly Antibes, Cannes and Nice were very busy, not as congested as we have experienced in the past.

The 3 Star campsite we were on at Roquebrune Sur Argens close to Frejus, was never more than 75% full, one thing I did noticed was that some Touring Pitch's had a marker on them, saying reserved and the start date showing, but no one ever turned up in a number of cases, so not sure what that was all about.

Parking down at the beach's was never a problem, even the beach at Agay was very quiet, and we parked on the roadside just a couple of metres from the golden sands.

Me and my Son 29 spent a day cycling at the Base Nature Frejus, and we almost had the place to ourselves, yet 22 years ago when we tent camped at Camping Les Pin Parasols at Frejus the place was absolutely rammed, so it seems things may have changed.

We went to camping le castellated near Sete. It was a great site. We were the only british on it. The beach was direct access and so quiet, walk 5 mins from our pitch. A big site, but we chose to stay away from all the busy bits.
Lots to see and do close. We stayed in issoire, and ebrehuil. Camping de la filature was superb. Ex pats run it, and offer incredible hospitality.
