Was looking to take my dog on the ferry from Newcastle to Holland in the summer. Will be travelling in a motorhome if that makes any difference. I know the ferry takes dogs but I was looking for any advice and information on what happens? And for a bonus point, it would good if I could get a name of a vet in the area of Ijmuiden for the return home.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Kev, I presume you have read the pets advice for DFDS
DFDS Pets

...looks like they have kennels onboard the ferry.

Sorry, cannot help with the Vets details but I am sure others will be along shortly that have used this route with dogs.

No personal experience as i don't have a dog, but I am Dutch and have googled "dierenarts" (Dutch for vet) Ijmuiden. In this link you can see there is a vet quite close to the port.

They have a temporary website here which has a phone number, but no email address, so perhaps an idea to ring them?

There is also another one in Ijmuiden, link here. No map with the website, but there is a contact form, (the word contact is the same in Dutch), click on contact the left side of the homepage so you could contact them via that form.

Unfortunately it's all in Dutch, but if you need any help with translating, let me know!

Hi Kev it's really straight forward on the ferry taking the dog.
We have put our dog in a cage on the ferry but now we just leave him in the van and go down and check on him a couple of times it's no hassle.

Thanks for all the replies.

Gerona, I noted on the web site that you could leave animals in your vehicle but then it also said you can't get access to your vehicle but I presume you can then. Also what happens with getting the dog exercise and the toilet?

Hi Kev

You can get access to your vehicle you just have to go to the main desk and ask they get a member of staff to go down with you at a certain time 2 or 3 times we have been down.
we only walk the dog around and about near our vehicle pick up any deposits in a bag to put in the bin.
they have always parked us close to the kennels so we get him some water from there.
It really is easy and stress free even when he stayed in the kennels on board it was all good

If you find a a Vet perhaps you could email the name and address to these people who maintain the European Vet map in the "stickies" at the top of this section?
