Hi all,

I have realised that DFDS aren't doing a code for crossings next summer and the best I have come up with is night crossings in July & Aug school hols at £179.00 return for under 8 m motorhome with 2 adults & 2 kids.
Its a lot more than I paid last year but cheaper than sing Brittany ferries as we are going to the Vendee.
Is it a good deal or shall I wait to see if I can better it?

We have always done Dover-Dunkerque since 2009, but fancy a change for July 2015.

I phoned DFDS regarding Newhaven-Dieppe and they advised me that there is planned additional sailings for the crossing, instead of just the two as there is now.

So I am hoping that prices will be more competitive, DFDS advised me to check in the New Year.

Well prices have plummeted down from £300 to £140 for our July return crossing car+trailer, I was sorely tempted to book Newhaven and have been battling head over heart, especially now that there appears to be 3 crossings each way for this summer.

Anyway I have made the decision to stick with Dover - Dunkerque, despite the price now being £120 for car+trailer. if we were going to the Western end of the Med then it would be a no brainer using Newhaven.

But as we will be heading for Frejus, the Eastern autoroutes just make so much more sense.

Just need to decide either to book now or hang on untill February in the hope that a promo code may become available.

So maybe Newhaven for 2016 if there is still a service, as we may do Cap de Agde etc.

Thanks Francais might look at this one later as Newhaven similar distance for us than Dover/Folksestone so would save us around 100 miles each way for West coast

First time I have seen something other than Calais crossings actually work out cheaper overall cost for us

Yep the DFDS website mentions 3 sailings per day each way for summer only, but the timetable only shows the 2 regular crossings.

I guess the extra crossings need adding to the timetable with start and end dates.

However if you do a test booking as I did for July, a mid day out crosding comes up. along with the usual 10am and 11pm crossings, from Newhaven.

Does the 11pm one arrive around 5am local time (can't access site from here due to filters) ?

Have never used anything other than the Eastern crossings before as they never come close for us on overall price

Yes, the 11pm does get in about 5am in France, thats what we have booked with a cabin, roads are clear when you get there and its a much easier driver to the Vendee than from Calais.

We once did a midnight crossing, Dover-Dunkerque, and checked into our the B&B hotel at Arras at around 5am.

First problem was that we had got on the ferry almost 12 hours earlier than booked, so in effect had arrived at the hotel the day prior to what we had booked.

Stupidly we had not realised this, but this later explained why we had trouble getting in to the hotel, and ended up waking half the guests up, not to mention a rather non to pleased hotel manager, before we eventually got into a room at 7am.

It is amazing what tiredness can do to you, even after having had around 3 hours sleep, then setting of on the road at11am it was the following day when the lost nights sleep really caught up with Mrs Francais, at was was our third hotel stop on the journey from Manchester to the Southern Ardeche.

I was fine, but I found out from the experience that if Mrs Francais does not get her 8 hours kip at her normal time, the price to pay is formidable.
