Hi, we are looking to go to France on our first trip this year and were considering driving as far as Dover, stopping there overnight, before catching the early train over.
Are there any service stations etc that you could recommend close to the chunnel?
Cheers
Tony.

just updated my thread on the the same topic ... ... we stayed here http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/campsites/uk/kent/nrdover/thefieldadjacenttobeancourt
I think we payed about £10 ... it was great for the kidas, as the owners have farm animals that they allow visitors to "pet" ...

We have also used this site, would recommend it and also recommend checking out the route on google maps prior to journey, it isnt too tricky but a country lane so looking at the lane first helped. We also have stayed at Blackhorse Farm caravan club site when arriving late as they have an area for late arrivals and early departures. They site people together who leave at similar times to avoid noise disturbance for others leaving at different times (if that makes sense!) There are other cl sites in the area that im sure others will have knowledge of. Good luck

Hi Tony, Even at 9 pm we would always cross the Channel that first evening.
You say you are going by the tunnel so you can stay at the service station as you leave the tunnel area on the French side, or at Cite d Europe parking area, or at motorway service areas further down the autoroute if you want to go on for one more hour..
Park on the promenade, it's free after 6.30. We used to walk down to the Hotel and use their toilets and have a drink before retiring, 2 mins to the port. Don't use Dover any more, go from Portsmouth - Caen crossing now, I came down from the Wirral, bloody motorways were a nightmare, plus the Dartford crossing, final straw was 2 years ago when it took us 9 hrs to get home, but of course if you are going to northern France then it won't work.

Thanks all, we will be getting there quite late, probably around 9pm hence the querie ref services.
Do you think this would cause a problem for these sites?
Thanks.
you can arrive at the drum anytime you like before pub closing time and leave when you like in the morning. It was £15 inc electric when we went earlier this year
I too would get there and cross its amazing how much faffing if that be the right word your morning crossing takes its 30 minutes tunnel 1 hour ferry but its all the other messing tickets passports on off that well over double the time so have a 9 am crossing with adding the hour your 10 am 30 minutes actual crossing 10.30 and allow about same again getting under way 11.00 am. Get across the evening if you can its afar easier to stay in France
