After spending the last 2 summers near Annecy we are thinking of going that bit further this year to Lake Garda. I'd be grateful of any tips you might have on best route to drive (we live in the North West of England) or general tips on holidaying in Italy.
Many thanks!

My general tip would be to go to Italy by all means, but oh dear why does everyone just go to Lake Garda?
The Dolomites are staggering, Venice is astonishing, the open air opera in the Roman arena at Verona is amazing, Tuscany is pretty good though Umbria I think is better, and my regret is that we never got down to Rome.
But the route to get to Lake Garda? Across Germany, into Austria and over the Brenner Pass. Follow all the others. Enjoy. You'll love Italy. Have a great time.
... and from Garda you can easily visit Venice and Verona.
We have stayed at both Camping La Rocca and Camping Cisano.
Route wasthrough Belgium, luxembourg (only just) then Germany into Austria and the Brenner into Italy ( as above).
We stopped twice en route.

We will be high season unfortunately, July/August. I've always wanted to visit Lake Garda and figured it would be a good base to visit Venice and Verona. I will look up those campsites, thanks for that :-)
We liked Garda too, and did Verona and Venice from there by train, a lovely way to see both and without any of the problems of trying to drive there.
We were at Camping Eden beween San Felice del Benaco and Salo - about a third up from the south end of the lake, on the west side - we found this a somewhat quieter area than the southern lake shore which was very busy, with some very large sites. We had a pitch on a top terrace, overlooking the lake, and had stunning views, though getting up and down was strenuous. We were there in June and it was very hot - but do watch out for the fireflies at night. If you see them in any number they are absolutely stunning!
You can get a train to Venice and Verona from Desenzano del Garda at the southern end of the lake.
Try to find a site near Dezenzano del Garda, or Peschiera del Garda, so that train connections to Verona, Venice and Milan are easy, and handy for the Ferries.
May be advisable to book for peak season, as it will be very busy. Plenty of info the link below.
Lake Garda in the peak season will be manic, so be prepared. Its and easy drive to Verona but go on a Sunday so that parking will be easier and free. If you go to Venice for the day it will only be a taster, it really needs a week. AS to route I would go down through Germany and over the Fern and Brenner Passes which then takes you down the eastern side of Lake Garda.
Have to say, four years ago we camped on three lakes, Como, Iseo and Garda and then in the Dolomites.
Garda was bottom of the preferences ... though Verona was a very good day, as was Milan (by train).
We stayed well up the west side (Limone) to keep clear of the southern melee.
Two years ago we did Venice for three gays and Tuscany for ten ... now that was fabulous ... very cultural! and you have to like that sort of thing.
I love Lake Garda and for me the prettiest part of the lake is the north end from about halfway up.Until recently I holidayed there every year for ten years, staying at Malcesine on the north east side of the lake, a lovely little town with a cable car going to the top of the mountain fanastic views from up there on a clear day.
The last time I was there with my now-ex we did a cycle-camping trip right round the lake and on the last night stayed at Camping Nanzel just outside Limone. It's a lovely site right by the lake, with terraced pitches, and the ones at the front are only a few yards from the water. I was so impressed that I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if and when I go back to that area.

I was aiming for Garda but after advice from our friends here on UKCS am heading for Lake Maggiore instead, and I have to say, it looks amazing! Safe travels everyone
