hi everyone,
We are hoping to go back to france this year after camping there about 4 years ago (trailer tent). It was wonderful but last time my planning didn't work very well and it took a lot longer to arrive than i'd thought! This time we would like to arrive at Calais, travel halfway to the vendee, stay overnight somewhere and then continue our journey the next day and then do the same on the way home. Can anybody recommend some stops on the way, suitable for a trailer tent to be half put up -just for an overnighter -something cheap and cheerful!
last time we camped at la paree preneau and we loved it it was exactly what we wanted. We went in the last 2 weeks of august and there was one disco a week, just a kids club on a couple of mornings on the first week and it was really quiet there. There were two pools - indoor and outdoor, a lovely play area for the kids. we dont want bells and whistles, parties, entertainment, somewhere to send the children... we are hoping to find the same kind of site again maybe with a little more for the children to do but nothing huge. We don't want the full on waterslides, disco every night (just a couple of times!)
Any recommendations would be fantastic. Our kids will be 5-14. We stayed in the Saint-Hilaire area last time, ideal for the beach. Would quite like to be in a similar area (Saint Jean de monts, saint-Gille) but open to all suggestions!
Many thanks in anticipation!
Lucy

Hi Lucy

I would recommend if going to the Vendee area, to consider using the route north or Roeuen and down the A84 towards Caen, Rennes and Nantes to save on toll fees, as past Le Havre its pretty much toll free and only about an hour longer overall than Le Mans, Angers route.

If going that route we have stopped overnight at Camping le Puits, which is literally just off the A84 near ST Martin Des Besaces. Lovely little bar and restaurant on site with charismatic Irish owners!

About 250 miles from Calais and leaves just over 200 miles or so to St Jeans de Monts area for example

Last two weeks of August you should have good choice of sites, and worth looking through the review section on here by area if you haven't already

Hi Lucy
A site with consistently good reviews is La Ferme du Latois at Coex - because it's some way inland you'll have far more space than the beachfront sites , and as it's Dutch owned and managed it's very well run. But are you happy with being ten miles inland?

I agree that the route you've already been given is a good one. But our own decision about an overnight site is usually taken about lunch time on the day in question .When we see how we are getting on and how we feel then we start thumbing through the site guide book.

I hope it all goes well for you.

Hi Elsie1

For the past 2 years we have over nighted at the municiple campsite at beaumont sur sarthe near to Le mans. it is very popular with brits, dutch and belgians overnighting on their way south. on both occasions we have had a riverside pitch with hook-up.

The facilities are spotless and the town is pleasant enough to enjoy a stroll around. there is also a supermarket in town for cheap fuel and provisions.

Hi Lucy,

We've done the vendee several times. We use the Rouen/Le Mans/Angers route just for simplicity. It does cost on tolls but is very straightforward.

We too have stayed at Beaumont sur Sarthe each time; thoroughly recommended and makes the trip down very relaxing.

We've stayed at La Garangeoire and Le Guyonniere. Both sites have excellent facilities for kids and adults alike. It is about 10 miles inland but beach is easy to travel to, and importantly there are several beaches within easy reach so you have a choice!

A positive for Coëx is that a couple of miles away in Apremont is a large lake with a beach, so if you don't fancy a day at the coast you have the lake as an alternative.

Have a look at Bonneval     ACSI 1726

It is practically midway between Calais and St Hilaire. Situated on N10 between Chartres and Chateaudan.

Large covered municipal swimming pool adjacent to site, free use of their computer and enormous cheap meals to save you having to cook on an overnight stop.

Another vote for La Garangeoire. Very nice small site.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.

Can you book a municiple site? Or is it just pot luck on arrival? Im a bit nervous to leave it to fate but the site at Beumont Sur Sarth looks perfect - cant see a way of booking though?

Yes you can book that one - there's a contact us link and then a contact form on the Beaumont town hall website.

Totally agree, we have booked to go back for our second year this July/Aug to Brunelles.
I know its in the Caravan Club book for this year although we book direct. We go Newhaven to Dieppe as its cheaper than using Brittany, the drive is a bit quicker for us as we are in a Motorhome now.
Our kids love the site, amazing water park & lots of flat cycle paths to explore.
