The cheapest crossing would be probably Dover-Calais. You then have two choices either to go through Belgium into German or go down through France and out to Metz on the A4 before joining the German autobahn system. The Belgium/Germany route will be cheaper as there are no tolls but will be very much busier traffic wise. Depends how comfortable you would be with towing for the first time on busy roads? You also need to know that the towing speed in Germany on motorways is 10mph lower than the UK so you need to take that into account when planning. I have never found driving on the left a problem although it would be sensible to have some decent towing mirrors as closing speeds on some autobahns can be surprising to say the least. We have enjoyed touring in Germany for many years and like all things new it takes a while to get used to different things.
If you decide you would like to go to Germany I could help plan a rotute with campsites for you you would need to contact me giving a few details. dvphillips14 at hotmail.com
Thanks so far ! its becoming real now, I have towed for last 30 years but never left our fair shores , so know nothing about ferries or such like , I pull a sprite major 6 and pull with a chevy captiva.Im not a great fan of long marathon drives so would likely stop over on route thanks Dekomp

I don't know what a "chevvy captiva" is but if it is a big 4x4 then you will be restricted to 80 or 90 kph in France regardless of what you are towing.
Have a look at the Caravan Club website for full details.
Once you have experienced towing and driving on the continent, you'll not want to do it in the UK again! As you are going out of season you will not need to book a site -- just turn up. Have a look at the ACSI website and you will get an idea of just how many camp sites are available.

If you can, travel on a Sunday no HGV 's on the roads they are not allowed so they are all parked up in service / rest areas.
We will be going that way to Konstance then on to Romanshorn on the Swiss side of lake in May. Dover / Calais, A26 / A4 to Strasbourg, then pick up road 33 then on to the A81 and you are just about there, we will be having a overnight stop around Metz.
