Like you our first ever camping trip to France was to the Dordogne, and then the west coast (two centre holiday).  But unlike you we decided to go further south for the next holiday as we found that our son travelled better than we imagined, so we went to what became our favourite area - the Gorges du Tarn, Jonte and Dourbie - and we stayed at Val de Cantobre, which also became a favourite campsite.  We went back many times over the course of twenty seven years, not every year, but when we had a hankering for the area, and only stopping when the owners, who had become friends, sold the site.  Sometimes we just stayed a few days, but if the weather was warm we might stay for two weeks.

It's a beautiful area, spectacular scenery, wildlife, and wonderful things to do and see around every corner.  There are mediaeval villages, lovely rivers and gorges, vultures flying overhead from the reintroduction centre in the Gorges du Jonte, flower filled verges, and good value places to have a meal.  Sometimes it's worth going further south to be more sure of the weather and we still find ourselves drawn back to that area.  So personally I would say that the best area for camping in France in July and August would be the Gorges du Tarn.  One other advantage is that though a beautiful area, it's nothing like as crowded as the Dordogne even in peak season.

Those first two holidays set the scene for what was to become a love affair with France and we've been back to France every year for the past thirty four years!

We had on/off wind and rain in the Tarn Gorge last July for our first week, second week was better and we did manage some sun bathing.

We came to the conclusion that what we sacrificed with the wall to wall sunny weather was more than made up for in scenery, stunning area.

The weather anywhere in France is just so unpredictable at the moment.  It seems to me that when we first started going we used to have almost wall to wall sunshine, with just the odd day of rain. We have three friends who have houses in France, in the Poitou-Charente, the Minervois, and the Aude, and all reported that July and some of August this year were (mostly) dreadful.

I think for those that have to book it's important to choose an area where there are plenty of things to do and see in poor weather (as Coastal-Path has said), wherever that is.

It's already been said, earlier, that you can actually just go where the weather is best, even in July and August, provided you're prepared to stay on smaller sites and travel to the areas with the best weather.  Perhaps the more intrepid peak season travellers might start doing just that in view of the unpredictable weather these days!

Two years ago we had a brilliant fortnight in Brittany, which is close to the ferry and not so hot. However, last year we started in Spain with two weeks of mixed but quite nice weather, then had two weeks of rain as we traveled up through France!

I had booked the sites in Brittany, but decided to take pot luck last year. In spite of it being peak season we always found a pitch.
