Hi
I know the new A86 tunnels to the West of Paris are open. Has anyone been through the designated LGV/overheight vehicle one? i.e. the one without the 2 m restriction. If so, was it easy to find for both north and south bound? I usually use the A12 then N12 route, but the A86 looks an interesting alternative.

I knew the A86 duplex tunnels with a 2 metre height restriction were open. Are you saying the additional tunnel for higher vehicles has now been built?
I found this..
The A86 West Tunnel forms the final link of the 80km A86 ringroad around Greater Paris. Completed in January 2011, the tunnel allows the journey from Malmaison to Versailles to take only ten minutes, rather than 45 minutes.
At a cost of €2.2bn, the A86 West consists of two toll tunnels; one is an innovative 10km double-deck tunnel (duplex motorway) for light vehicles, the other, at 5.5km, is along more traditional lines with just a single deck designed for all vehicles including HGVs.

I have searched through other forums and ex-pat information sites. As suspected, there does not appear to be a "taller" alternative, despite what the initial publicity says.
Both Michelin travelplanner (with caravan option used) and TomTom (with caravan specified on Camping Europe Map) assume you can go through. Worrying!
The duplex tunnel is our preferred route round Paris. Must have done it at least 10 times now and I can't remember seeing any signs for a non-heightresticted tunnel. Will be using it again on the way north a week on Friday so I'll check

A13 to A86.(west)
So here we have it! This Tunnel does not duplicate the infamous and expensive duplex. Therefore the link A13 to A86 is not possible with a 'van - despite what TomTom caravan Europe, Michelin planner and AA would have us believe.( all configured to include caravan!)
"Tunnel WEST ' Accessible to all vehicles including heavy weight not exceeding 4.5 meters in height. Between Rueil-Malmaison and Bailly A12, south of the Triangle of Rocquencourt, western tunnel passes successively under the municipalities of La Celle-Saint-Cloud, Louveciennes and Rocquencourt"
There was a picture on a motorhome forum of a large motorhome who obviously believed that he could get through the 2 metre tunnel - and was well and truly written off.
I think they ran out of money before building the second phase of the tunnel!
For caravans and motorhomes wanting to skirt Paris on the WEST side there is a perfectly workable North to South route leaving the A16 autoroute at junction 10 , crossing the Seine on the high bridge at Conflans Ste Honorine , and reaching the A13 autoroute at junction 6. Or of course you can reverse it.
Sat navs may try to send you on the inner city Peripherique instead so are best ignored on approaching Paris.

Yup, thanks for that. I am coming down from Ouistreham and heading to Yillers sur Orge, which is SE (just) of Paris. Hence my interest in the A86 link, which is now sorted!
Thanks.
I am desparetely looking for a route around Paris too as we took the inner road last year and had a nightmare journey with 4 crying kids and 2 very stressed parents - we come from Cherbourg and travel to Disney and with a journey that should take 4 hours took us almost 8- on the plus we did get up very close to the Eiffel tower ! - so this tunnel I cant use if I am over 2 mtrs ? Anyone any alternative routes then ?

If you are too high for tunnel then the alternative that could be less congested would be to go off A13 at A12 exit signposted Lyon, keep following signs for Lyon, brings you onto N12 then A86 middle ring then follow signs Metz Nancy, brings you onto A4 out of Paris which is the road you want for Disney. Follow the signs not your satnav. This way is further than around inner ring & could still be busy, it depends what time of day you are driving.
Thanks Billy will have a look at that route - I always try to have a printed copy of the route along with the sat nav just to be sure - driving in Paris is so stressful and with cars and motorbikes lane hopping all the time its so easy to go wrong

Hi Safron, I too have used the route suggested by Billy, when we were going East. It works and so long as you watch for the signs, is an easy drive. Go for it!
