We have 2 boys aged 17 and 14 . We have been to France many times and Germany and have had some great adventures! We would like an action packed holiday - possibly on the south west coast of France. Has anyone got any recommendations? I was thinking about getting the ferry to Santander and go from there. If u have any ideas - please let me know!

When our boys were just a bit younger, 13 and 15 we went to Holland and they claim that it was the best holiday they ever had. I am sure that was more to do with the company than the place!!!!!

Lots of sites along that stretch of coast from Biaritz to Bordeaux if they like surfing try Hossengor lots going on or the smaller town of Contis Plage has lots going on. We used to spend lots of holidays at La Rive Biscarosse big site but lots going on for teenagers situated on a large lake with lots of water sports on offer and the beach a 10/15 min drive away, the site isn't for everybody as gets very busy high season but our teenagers used to love it.

What do your teenagers actually enjoy doing? As Dartman says, if they enjoy surfing and other watersports the beaches of the west coast are a good option but if they like snorkelling then the rocky coasts of the Med are perhaps better.

If they like climbing, mountain-biking, and canyoning then it's the wrong area!

If they like art galleries, and history then you may be better going elsewhere.

My sons had favourite sites, but as David Klyne hints, at that age it was much more to do with the families (or rather the girls) next door. We actually booked a specific pitch on one site (first time ever) because they wanted to meet up with the two Dutch girls from next door.

Their favourite area was the Ardeche where they could canoe, bodyboard, jump from rocks, climb, go canyoning or bungee jumping, go caving, and just 'hang-out' around the river. It was a lively area for teenagers, with plenty going on in Vallon Pont d'Arc, and in other campsites in the area.

SW coast is great for surfing etc and lots of interesting vilages to visit.

If you are going into santander it may be worth doing a couple of days in the picos de Europe. Bilbao is fantastic too for a night. Theres the gugenheim and the old town, which is full of tapas bars. When we went there were loads of musicians out in the evening. One street had folk, one had jazz, another punk Etc.

Our teenagers just went where we happened to be going . We couldn't shake them off till well after that so we must have got something right . So you choose where YOU want to go, Sue. The one who pays the piper calls the tune.

If you go via Santander ... don't bypass the fantastic opportunities on the north coast of Spain.
The Picos de Europa offer fantastic walking/hiking, horse riding, kayaking, paragliding, cycling etc
The Cares Gorge walk is one of the best and most spectacular.
The coast line is a succession of wonderful coves and beaches.
Then there's mediaeval villages like Santillana ... marvellous caves like Soplao, and the world famous Altamira cave paintings.
And the incredible Guggenheim in Bilbao ... even if you don't go in, the outside views are quite extraordinary.
Tree top adventure parks are pretty well everywhere now, Spain and France have plenty.
There are good white water runs from several points down the western Pyrenees ...
So many possibilities ... so much depends on which/what activities you are really after.

Wow! Thank you all for your recommendations! I have booked the ferries. We have stayed at Playa Joel at Noja for a week a couple of years ago and we weren't that keen. It put us off Spain a bit, but I would like to see the Picos de Europa. It's a shame it's in the the opposite direction to the coastline of France that we are hoping to get to!
