Bit the bullet at the weekend and joined Brittany Ferries Club Voyage Spain club. £215 for this years membership, but booked ferry for August to Bilboa and back by Santander saving £295.

Now where to go? Can't decide if we want to do Blanes again as we really enjoyed the evening cycle along the promenade into town for dinner. Was considering bay of roses but can't find a campsite in a similar situation, i.e within walking/cycling distance of town with restaurants. Did like Playa Joyel in Noja in the north but it lacked suitable eateries.

If you are going to Bilbao and back via Santander ... why on earth are you doing a huge hike across Spain to the other side?
The North Coast is a fantastic area .... beaches to die for, the amazing Picos de Europa, fantastic countryside, brilliant caves, kayaking rivers, beautiful towns and villages .... the extraordinary Gughenheim in Bilbao ... it's a gem of an area ...
We've holidayed there for seven of the last fifteen years, and will keep going back.

Perhaps it's the freezing cold Atlantic. Puts me off every time.

Try Camping Joan at Cambrils a little further down the coast.

Theres a dedicated cycle road on a non vehicular prom (unlike Blanes where you either get a metre at the side of the road or not much else.)
The town has a reputation for good restaurants and if you should so wish, you can catch a bus (we're motorhomers) or drive the 10miles to Tarragona which, if it were in the UK would out attract Bath, York or any other so called Tourist towns that we have.

We were considering holidaying in that area but, according to the weather charts, there's an awful lot of rain about, even in August. How did you find it Kelper?

Hi try Camping Salata in Roses. Right in the middle of the resort, short walk to the beach and all the activities in the area. We stayed there for three years and really enjoyed. Lovely Prom and plenty of bars and Restaurants within a short distance.

In seven years of camping in the area ... we've met very little rain, and never for a full day. July and August have always been very sunny.
The Picos can be a little more variable ... mountains always are ... but we have had wonderfully sunny holidays there, too.
Wet in winter ... yes ... but, we haven't found that in summer.

Thanks for that Kelper, I wonder why the climate charts paint suck a bleak picture.

We're torn again now, can't decide between the north coast or the med side.

Well ... the joy of being mobile is that you can up sticks and go whenever you like.
We always make final decisions about where to camp when we are actually on the ferry ... forecasts at that range are pretty good ...
So, plan some alternatives, and go with the predicted short range forecast.
If the weather is good on the north coast, it's a bit of a waste of time and money to trek all the way across to the other coast.
On the other hand ... if the forecast is poor for the north west and good north east ....
That way you can't lose ... always the big advantage of camping versus package or hotel hold.
One of the big advantages of the north west coast is the much lower tourist crowd factor, and certainly fewer brits and germans ... the dutch like it ... always a plus in my book!

We were in N Spain last August for two weeks. There was some (torrential) rain in the Picos, but it soon blew over and the sun came out. The north coast is beautiful, with the mountains behind, and the sea was warm enough for me, and I am a softy.

We then travelled into France and it rained for most of the next two weeks!
