Hi,

Was thinking of driving down to Spain camping on the way and taking a few days to get there , can anyone recommend any that they have actually stayed at, there are two of us early 30's camping in a tent we don't have children (yet).

Any advice or just general do's and dont's would be most gratefully received

Thanks
Christian

Hi Christian

Doo you mean sites in Spain or sites on the way?

Firstly, whichever you mean, have a look at the ACSI Card website www.campingcard.co.uk - there are 1600 campsites in France. If you're going outside peak season then this will get you a discount and some , sites are just 10 euros per night! (Look under 12 euros). If you're going in peak season then have a look at the municipal campsites website - for sites within walking distance of towns and villages.

Secondly what sort of sites do you like? Do you want the sort where you may have no neighbours and be able to make a campfire, or a bar with pool, restaurant and bar. French sites are very different to British sites, particularly in low season, and some of the very biggest sites can actually be quite quiet. Recommendations from others will be better if they know what sort of site you're looking for.

Do's and don'ts - have a look at the post for Continental First Timers (above). It's probably overdue for editing now, as it's quite an old post, but it will give you a lot of helpful tips, and hints.

Thanks val for rapid response ,
I should have explained myself a little more we have camped all over France and loved it, so quite fancy Spain med coast side, don't really mind what sort of campsite be nice to have a little mix of all of the above if that's possible ? Would've nice to be able to walk to the sea and maybe a bar or restaurant .
Possibly thinking about a stop over in Andorra on the way down as never been there before.
Also we've found that in Spain to be a little cheaper than France on the whole even though (and I prefer Rioja )
Any ideas would be helpful
Thanks

Well, we liked Camping L'Amfora at St Pere Pescador in the southern part of the Bay of Roses - which is walking distance to the beach, lovely new washblock to the southern side of the site, good pools, excellent supermarket, and lovely large grassy pitches, particularly early in the season. Plenty to do in the area, and further afield. It's a Camping Cheque site which gives a good discount in early and late season. We also liked the area around Playa d'Aro where there are some lovely coves and small beaches. Even Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar have some really lovely bits!

We stayed in camping Internacional, La Fosca within walking distance to Palamos. There is a local beach which is lovely and Palamos itself is a 20 minute walk. The site has a swimming pool, a very small shop and a bar serving food. The barman even delivers food to your pitch although we are low season caravanners. The site is a little unkempt but we had a wonderful 4 weeks there and again it is camping cheque. There is an offer of 7nights for the price of 6. Calella de Palafrugel is a pretty little fishing village where there is a large campsite Camping La Siesta. We looked around it when we were at Internacional. We liked the look of it but it was too close to Palamos to merit packing up and moving there. From what I remember, the out of season price was very reasonable but as with most sites, the price takes a big hike in July. Hope this helps. Jean

If you are taking the route past Andorra then its an easy drive down to the coast nr Tarragona. The site in that area we go to is this one, its naturist if you fancy some of that. Its right on the beach & near a town with supermarkets etc.

you could go to la torres del sol at Montroig ,it is the sister site of the one Billy posted,(also you can use that site for the odd day as well) and is at the same route through Andorra and down to Reus and Salou. This site has everything you want,it has its own beach, beach bar, pools ,jacusis, resturants, and you can use acsi card, which means it is cheaper out of season.look for my review on this site and cross ref with acsi site and its own web site.We are going there this year in April and will not return until end of June,we have a caravan and will be in a pitch right next to the sea(extra 4 euros a night but worth the extra)Plenty of space for tents, our daughters flew out to us one year and we took and pitched tent for them ,they had a wonderfull time.
Also plenty to do off site as Salou is about 16 k from site, also Tarragona and Montserrat is a must.Hope this helps, let me know if you need more info

Some years ago we went to Calella de Palafrugel and stayed on Moby Dick campsite. Not a lot to offer but very convenient for beach and town. Lovely area. Go to Pals beach and try the naturist section!

When the kids were a lot younger we used to go to the all singing all dancing site EL DELPHIN VERDE,it was near Torella Montgris and L'Estartis .We had to go in peak season and even then(20 years a go)it cost us over £26 a night, but it was worth it as the kids were busy every moment, also we only used to go for 2 weeks,so was affordable. Unfortunately it has never accepted camping cheques or acsi card,so it is much too expensive for us now that we holiday for 3 months or so._(I know its a hard life) lol:)

If passing through Andorra there is a campsite just past the spanish border, camping la frontera, i think they take acsi cards. We have stopped there on the way to El delfin Verde campsite near Pals. This campsite is big, but out of season there is plenty of space, it has a nice pool, a good bar with a restaurant which serves reasonable, although not fine dining, food. The supermarket on this site is excellent, with no overpricing that you expect in a site shop.

Have a look Kims Camping as well, its in Lafranc which is next to Calella de Palafrugel. It is a lovely coast walk between the 2 places. And Lafranc is a on a very pretty Bay with no high rise. The only bad side to Kims is the steep drive from Reception to the pitches at the top but we have done it a number of times with a Caravan on the back so you would be fine driving solo.
