Hi Barry 915 It was on a motorway aire,Billy said plenty of other people stay within the Eurotunnel site,and plenty of other people stayed on this motorway aire,in fact it was so full we took the last parking space,so just because others do it does not mean you will not be robbed,in fact the crims broke into 3 other vans and finaly smashed a car window with sleeping occupants,and took ladies handbag,her screams are what woke us up.
sorry to rant but I only stay on sites now for peace of mind.Obviously you decide what is right for you ,but don't say you hav'nt been warned
P.S.The aire was SIGEAN,NEAR NARBONNE.

From past experience I would commend that you head for the Port of Calais. (I know, you just got off the chunnel!!!)
Follow the signs for "Sans Billet"(without Tickets) and that will take you into a large car park surrounded by a high fence. Look to the left before you have travelled very far and you will see a low building. That building houses the meanest, nastiest, growliest(made up word) Policemen in the whole world ie. The French CRS Riot Police.
They will ensure that you will not be mugged, robbed, burgled etc and you will have an uninterrupted nights sleep.
Yes, you may have to travel about 8miles in the 'wrong' direction from that which you wish to go but how long will that take you on a motorway the following morning. You won't even have to unhitch.
